Good for commecial interior designers
The most helpful aspects of this book is it'ssolutions for designing for disabled people in the workplace.Since the ADA was established in 1992, accomodating the needs of the disabled is now a requirement for all newly designed spaces.This book helps interior designers not only accomodate these needs, but tries to provide ideas for solving the design problem creatively. Technically Lacking
The book doesn't deliver on presenting a computer application system forevaluating performance.Ittakes the CCRC's accredition questions andjust expands on them. From the information that was presented I not sure ifthe authors know what an application system is.In any event the booklacks any hard technical information, or performance standards, that can beused for evaluating and designing a project. Why Buy A Reprint of a Government Document
It's bad enough to have persons without disabilities profit from their work and advocacy, but it's particularly offensive to copy to works of both Government and Ron Mace, put their name on it and call it an original work.
A Teacher helping a student's family
I am an elementary school teacher. This passed school year, I had a student whose mother was in a wheelchair. We spoke about his mother�s situation and the difficulty his mother had getting into their home and maneuvering around the house. The doors of the house are too narrow; there isn�t enough space in the bathroom for her to safely transfer out of the wheelchair onto the toilet. Also, the mother has received many burns from reaching over boiling pots to turn the knobs on and off. I decided to do some research over the summer for this family regarding how homes can be made to be more accessible for people with disabilities. I came across this book in the search for books and decided to by it. I found the book to be well-written, clear and concise, and easy to read. The diagrams also added to the readability. They were very useful in giving a visual explanation. This book opened my eyes to many issues regarding the accessibility of people with disabilities. ... Read more

Forty of the 120 pages are Checklist and Graphic Guidelines. It is nice to have them in one place; they are detailed, incorporating issues such as the environment. Accept for grab bars, etc. there is not much that I wouldconsider of "modest or no additional cost," as the book jacketpurports. High access home IDEAS . . .
Okay, so this book doesn't contain much in the way of product identification or info on how to buy anything. Still, if -- like us -- you are in the process of designing a home in which you expect to live for the rest of your life, what this book does do, and do well, is prove that accessible design CAN be beautiful (and "no," it isn't necessary to spend a fortune to implement most of the ideas in this book).This book is like any other interior design book -- the ideas are illustrated with high-end products.But once you "get" what needs to be modified for an accessible home, most of the ideas can be incorporated into standard construction.We found this book both enjoyable and helpful.

Is it worth your money? Depends on what you are looking for!
This book is beautifully laid out, the photography is well done and it would make a coffee table sparkle. But its usefulness is limited to new house construction, to people who like open floor plans, and for those whohave the money to spend. I believe it will be of little help to anyone whois working with an older home and is remodeling rather than gutting it andstarting over. Also I disagree with some of the layouts in kitchens, etc.as to how easy they are to access with a wheelchair or with a person whosedisability prevents them from bending forward or side to side. There isinefficiency to have a person open two doors and then extend drawers. Youcan design drawers with a lower side to view contents. There were twophotos that helped me to visualize concepts I had read about elsewhere. Isit worth your money? Depends on what you are looking for!

High-Access Home
This book is totally impractical and a big waste of money.It portrays "mansions for the disabled" by use of dramatic single and double-page pictures.The text is sparse and often uninformative.It hasan almost total dearth of practical information which would be useful toanyone but a multi-millionaire.For example, one photo shows abeautifully decorated living space which includes, as its sole sop to thehandicapped,a wheelchair with an attractive throw pillow on its seat. (How practical is that?)Another photo shows a kitchen with almost nocabinetry below the countertops, enabling a person in a wheelchair to workat any of the surfaces.But what tools, dishes or food would this personfind for his or her use? Unfortunately, most of these items must then bestored out of reach in its overhead cabinets.The small amount ofpractical information available could be, and has been, successfully put ina pamphlet. While the jacket cover claims that the book contains"practical advice for converting your home for accessibleliving," what is actually depicted are new homes of amazing size andsplendor, not accessible to 99.9% of all people, disabled or otherwise.I am still looking for a definitive text on planning for accessability. This is so much easier to build into a home than it is to add later.Ipersonally feel that it would be desirable if all new homes could be builtwith accessibility in mind.Yet the topic is rarely mentioned in any bookon home design. ... A thoughtful presentation on design and adaptation.
This fascinating book provides a complilation of articles centered around the issue of individuals residing where they want, despite disability & illness. It begins by proposing that universal design, rather than specialized design, can be cheaper & more convenient for people with certain disabilities. I'd like to ask Mr. Burk for a recommendation
I checked out "Accessible Housing" from the library and found it quite informative, but then again, I am not an architect.Would you recommend a book on this subject that is better to read? Accessible Housing by Leon
Don't bother buying this book if you are an architect, which I am.This is not a truly good reference book to aid in the design process.It does not have enough ADA criteria illustrated in graphic form to make it a quickgraphical reference.It requires lots of time to wade through Leon'sverbose presentation of poorly indexed information.Leon likes to hearhimself talk more than getting to the point for the needs of the reader. Obviously the book was written for profit, not as an aid for others.Iwould not have bought this book if I had seen it first. ... Read more
