One of those books you keep by the computer.
When the publisher calles this book 'Bible' he means it. 1200+ pages on how to use the software. The back of the book says that this book is intended for 'Beginner to Intermediate' users. To be sure there is an introductory chapter at the beginning of the book might be enough for a beginner to get started with AutoCAD. But I'd recommend starting somewhere else, like say a 'For Dummies' book.

Never out in print fast enough
Paul Aubin has done it again.Like my title says, Paul Aubin's books never come out fast enough for me.This book is a great resource for ADT users.There have been a lot of changes since ADT first came out.The major changes started in ADT 2004 and continue on thru ADT 2007.The changes from ADT 2006 to ADT 2007 are covered very well in this book.He takes you step by step thru a residential project & a commercial project.As you go thru the book he not only shows you how you command(s) work, but also why.He also gets into the subtle changes that have come about, e.g. Visual Styles.The books is arranged in such a way that you can be productive in ADT 2007 as you go along in the book.You don't have to wait until you are completed with the book to be productive.You can also move around in the book to go over a certain part of ADT without having to work your way up to it.For example, if you are just getting thru adding windows & doors & your work project needs to add a roof, you can go to the section of the book that covers roofs & you will be able to understand how to work roofs from reading the section withour having to do the sections before.But, if you can, go thru the book in the order that it's written to get the best grasp of ADT that you can.You can truly expect your skills to rise at least one level from going thru the book.

makes autocad easy to learn
what i like about this book, over the books that come from autodesk, the makers of autocad, is that it's trimmed down. it isn't filled with lots of extra stuff you will never use. this book is simple and straight forward, which is what you need when you're using a monster of a program like autocad. the reason for the monster, is so anyone, with varied applications, can use this program. ideally, the program be would customized per use; eg there could be autocad for drawing small mechanical parts, one for designing hvac systems, one for architecture (this finally exists in the form of autocad architectual desktop), one for circuit design, etc. with specialized versions of autocad, a manual could be written specific for each use. maybe this type of manual exists already, using autocad for each specific use, but i haven't found it yet. Just as any study text should be, this book is plodding in its presentation. As an engineer familiar with AutoCAD 11 but very rusty indeed, this manual was a relief. I easily mastered all of its concepts and even managed to figure it out ahead of the author's demonstration. For its price, this is the place to go for any beginner or, like me, an old dog learning, or in my case, re-learning old tricks. The book starts out slow with basic line commands and builds slowly. It was difficult sometimes, and I sometimes referred to a second book as a reference; this is usually a good idea unless you are a masochist -- buy a second highly recommended book. Later, the manual goes into more sophisticated drawings. It has not been effortless but the author should be commended for achieving his goal of making learning AutoCAD as painless as possible. And, the price is reasonable. In 2002, I took an AutoCAD LT class. It was far more difficult and less comprehensible than this manual. It seems to me, that a company could save money by using this text instead and allowing self-paced training.
Recommended for beginners
Simple, step by step instructions make this book a very smart choice for beginners. I am a student and purchased this book for school. AutoCAD does take patience to learn. This book walks you step-by-step through the process.

Good step by steps
This is a great book combined with a Intro/Begginer CAD class.

Great for all levels...
I have been using AutoCAD in school for a couple of years but never learned how to fully use it, or use it correctly. This book makes it easy to learn from scratch, or just focus on what you need. It is extremely easy to use and follow. You could realistically learn the whole book in two solid days of reading.

Easier Autocad
I have four Autocad books.This one is far and away the best of the bunch.It is comprehensive, and most important to me, it is easy to understand. My computer went through a major system crash which took just about all my programs with it.I had to reinstall Autocad Lt. and then reconfigure a bunch of my personal customizations.I could not have done it without this book.Whenever I have a question about Autocad this is the first reference I reach for.

Review
The book is extensive. However, if you are looking to learn 3D max, you'd better look for something else! This book is a reference guide more than anything else.

A Great Starting Place
If you're just getting started with Autocad this is one of the two books I sincerely recommend. Use this one first. But at the same time get a copy of AutoCAD 2007 Bible, by Ellen Finkelstein.

Harnessing AutoCad LDD
I did not care for the book. I did not feel it was written very well. It does not "read" well and is difficult to understand and follow the examples. I suppose, it is better than nothing and I keep it around as a reference only. Also, hardly and time is spent on the survey module only 1 example is given on runnning traverses.

Fully Comprehensive and an excellent reference.
I have more than five years using third party Acad applications for land development and I found this material systematic, well organized and easy to follow.The examples provided ( CD included) are sequential to the lectures which makes it an excellent didactic tool.On the other hand, the text does not cover the possible, or most common, types of reports that can be generated with the program in its differents applications. The overall organization is quite good..., however, if you have been using LDD for a while and have accessed the online help to learn the program, you may find much similarity in syntax. If you are new to using LDD, then it is worth the price of the book. Keep in mind though, if you need to pick up the overall working mechanism of this LDD software and civil design in general in a rather short period of time, you best bet may be going to an authorized learning center.(No, I don't work for anyone of them.) ... AutoCAD 2004 Bible
I bought this to get refreshed in Autocad for a new job and would recommend it to anyone.I can't do without it.

Excellent & Worthwhile
A marvellous and first class, well written and referenced, extremely clear and as if having an AutoCAD instructer sitting next to you. I was a new user to this product and I feel today very comfortable to do my tasks on AutoCAD and feel that this book will be a good guide even for advanced users. Best book of autocad I ever read.
I have read various book of autocad, but they all seem very complicated and dificuolt to understand. I found this bible and let me tell you that is the best book I have ever seem. I recomended to a friend of mine who wants to learn autocad. This book will challenge you as a beguiner, intermedite or advance user. It has lots of examples and this author know what she is talking about. Autocad 2006 for Dummies Review
Anyone who has attempted to use Autocad in the past knows that it is a very formidable task. At the present time I have only gotten into a few chapters of Autocad for Dummies. What I have read so far is written in plain English and is very easy to understand. I have high hopes for the rest of the book. As with any technical course, the material must be read and reread a number of times to absorb it completely. It is structured in a logical manner and addresses a wide spectrum of AutoCad techniques which I find very helpful. I am confident that with the help of this book, I will eventually be able to produce a usable drawing. Looks to be a good buy!!!

well suited for a beginner
Middlebrook writes in a deliberately breezy and informal style that is characteristic of the Dummies series. He explains the very latest 2006 version of AutoCAD. Necessarily, in an introductory book, he does not go very deep into the full extent of AutoCAD. But given just a minimal maths background on your part, you should be able to quickly lay out simple two and three dimensional objects using his advice. That maths mostly involves a good grasp of trigonometry and algebra.

Could use more detail
I found the book to describe a lot of the Acad funtions, but not enough detail in the functions I was looking for.

I bought the Mastering AutoCAD 2000 edition of this book few years ago and learned AutoCAD from scratch. This latest edition has continue to become a very good reference both for starter and intermediate user like me. Nevertheless there are few things that can be improved:

It was ok.
I used this book to get proficient in autocad 2006. It was tedious going through the first four chapters ( 1 week and then another for the rest of the book).There are probably other books as good. The book has slight mistakes, but all books do(on p112 on a image, arc explanation confusing just experiment). I'm thinking that an instructional DVD would be better. Make sure you download the examples from the internet for the book. It will clear up the explanations.

Great Book For Learning Autocad
I moved to Autocad from another drafting program. I never really took the time to properly learn Autocad.This book has been very enlightening.I now finally understand how Autocad works and how to use it efficiently.The book has an excellent tutorial in which you construct a small cabin.As you draw the cabin you work with the basics of setting up drawings and drawing lines.As you work through the book you work with elevations, text, dimensions, and also some of the more esoteric features of Autocad.I also bought two other Autocad books and this was by far the most useful.I highly recommend this book to anyone desiring to learn Autocad. ... Exactly what I was looking for!
I am a brand new AutoCad user and found this book to be exactly what I was looking for.This book delivers a lot of information at a steady pace but is not suited for someone who wants a crash course. You need to do the project in order to learn and this takes time, so be prepared to commit to it.
