5-0 out of 5 stars In the footsteps of the Renaissance Traveller
This book serves as a wonderful guide to a neglected side of Rome. Palladio's two guidebooks to the 'City of Wonders' published in 1554 were addressed to both his fellow architects and to religious tourists. He leads the reader into the ruins through the walls and gates, moves on to the roads, bridges, sewers and aqueducts, and then to the circuses, triumphal columns, arches and, finally, the temples. By using its useful annotated maps on site, this book allows the reader to follow in the footsteps of the Renaissance tourist. A reviewer in the New York Times described it as "A fascinating snapshot of Rome a century before the Baroque architects got their hands on it."
5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable guide to Rome
By using this book modern readers can get an extraordinary view of Rome, following in the footsteps of Palladio, the Renaissance master architect, as he takes them round the churches and antiquities. 5-0 out of 5 stars The magical fantasy of Carlo, Maestro d'Artes
What a joyous occasion it becomes to whirl through the new book on Venetian-born Carlo Marchiori, a master of many arts, who now lives and works in Calistoga, Ca., the northern-most town in Napa Valley. The book not only presents his life and work in a colorful, well-photographed journal, but it has the magical touch of Carlo's own imagination for the styling of the photographs, layout, and storyline. Now his mastery of arts includes book design as well as painting, drawing, sculpture, construction, architecture, and costume design! Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Heroic Age
Classical Architecture in Britain is a detailed insight in to British architecture, commencing with the works of Inigo Jones and finishing in the early nineteenth century. Arguably the most important period during Britisharchitecture, Worsley presents suprisingly novel sources and arguments. This book makes major advances upon the opinions laid down by earlierexperts such as Downes, Summerson, Colvin and Pevsner providing athoroughly modern analysis. Giles Worsley writes with fluid style makingthis book as equally understandable to the amateur as it is to the expert. Thus it is an enlightening read which I am sure will give many more greatpleasure. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to the Life & Works of Palladio
I became acquainted with the works of Palladio after taking an art history class that focused on the relevant time period. I was impressed with his designs but a little surprised that Palladio is not given much recognition by those outside of the world of architecture. This book helps, at least in some ways, to set things right.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Tavernor has done a first-rate job'
Sir John Summerson, reviewing the book in Architecture Today, 18 December, 1998 wrote: 'Andrea Palladio, probably the most famous architect in the western world, stands at the beginning of the movement called Palladianism. So successful was the Palladian formula that it was consciously revived outside of Italy and in other times, first by Inigo Jones at the court of Charles I in the early 17th century, by Colen Campbell and Lord Burlington in the early 18th century, and by Thomas Jefferson and others in the New World. In each case, what was appealing about Palladianism was more than a matter of style: it was the fact that it expressed a way of life and a humanist philosophy, deriving ultimately from ancient Rome but enriched by the thinkers of the Renaissance and the Augustan Age. In comparison to James Ackerman's The Villa, and Paul Holberton's Palladio's Villas 'Tavernor's book is the most erudite and the best written of the three books....Tavernor has done a first-rate job. His study is the most up-to-date Palladian book currently on the market....Rudolf Wittkower would, I know, have admired Tavernor's book as much as I do.' ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Read, Not Seen
I'm sure anything I say about the scholarship of Witold Rybczynski's `The Perfect House' would be superfluous. Mr. Rybczynski has written several books (most of which I've also had the privilege to read) on the history, techniques, and important personages of the architectural trade; he holds a professorship at Penn; he clearly loves his subject matter. I therefore really can't quibble with the fundamental material here; the book is literally stuffed with facts. I did, however, have difficulties with the author's style and structure--which ultimately affected some, though gratefully not all, of his story.
2-0 out of 5 stars Rybczynski phoned this one in...
This is a surprisingly lazy effort for Rybczynski, whose other writing on architecture I've found to be quite good, even exceptional. "The Perfect House" is a travelogue and collection of notes on the work of the 16th century Veneto architect Andrea Palladio, with a handful of sketches and photos sprinkled in to illustrate the works discussed. While Rybczynski does get an important point right -- that Palladio's work ought to be experienced first hand to be properly appreciated -- his pedestrian observations and low-key, easygoing style seem drastically mismatched to the drama of Palladio's architecture. And if Palladio must be directly experienced to be understood, why not provide proper photographs and drawings of the buildings to support the argument?
5-0 out of 5 stars Utterly engaging
Rybczynski has written a book that is part social history, part art history, and part travelogue, as he describes his journey through Northern Italy visiting and discovering the remaining country villas created by the great architect Andrea Palladio.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for students of architecture and the Renaissance
Architecture, no matter how interesting, can be a rather dry topic to read about. For that reason alone this book is worth having, since the writer Boucher deftly handles the material in an engaging and fluid style. However, the real strength of this tome is the way Boucher is able to get into the head of Palladio without ever resorting to speculation. This is accomplished through analysis not only of Palladio's as-built works, but also early versions of the plans and designs, rejected proposals, and a study of the architect's own vastly influential book, the Quatro Libri. Boucher chooses to discuss his structures by type (religious, villa, palazzi, civic) rather than chronologically, which requires frequent checking of the chronology section in the back to follow along. Although this format requires a bit more mental investment on the part of the reader, in the end it is a more illuminating way to understand Palladio's creative genius.

3-0 out of 5 stars Palladio's buildings in glorious black-and-white
This sturdy paperback is a complete catalog to the buildings of 16th Century architect Andrea Palladio. The descriptions are a bit dry, but the book is a "must" for serious architecture buffs with a passion for Palladio. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very intriguing and enjoyable study.
An initial enthusiastic interest in classicism in architecture led to my attending architecture school. This is a book I read during my first term, and I really enjoyed it tremendously.Very instructive as an introduction to the ideas of classical/renaissance architectural theory, as well as fun and "hands-on" with the included software.A previous reviewer seems to feel that the writing unfortunately pretentious. For better or for worse, however, almost all serious art and architectural writing has this kind of quality--or at least appears this way to those who aren't used to seriously thinking about ideas of aesthetics. It shouldn't put one off.The book is substantial, and fun at the same time.I enthusiastically recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Densely written
