5-0 out of 5 stars Not flawless, but a very good introductory guide to Pro-E Wildfire 2.0
The author has done a very good job in writing this introductory guide to Wildfire 2.0. As noted by the other reviewer, this is a great learning tool for the beginner and is quite detailed. There are very few mistakes (only the occasional figure no. & scale factor typos as well as an incomplete sentence or two). If the reader only works the tutorials and successfully solves the problems at the end of the chapter, he will at least be competent at 3-D part modeling, 2-D drawing, and generating assemblies. However, I do have a few minor quips to note. There is no information on how to recover from a mistake, which can leave the novice user quite frustrated. In addition, there is no coverage of how to repair a failed feature, which cannot be completed, or change(modify) a feature in an existing model. No example of top down modeling (i.e. drawing parts in an assembly first). No coverage of sheet metal modeling (the author may not have considered this basic, but I would). Pro-E is not intuitive. However, once the reader becomes comfortable with a few of the commands, the overall logic of how the program operates seems to make more sense. That said, some operations are very complicated, including copying a feature from one orientation to another orientation. Although it would be no simple task, this reader would like to see a listing of all of the commands and their options with descriptions, where appropriate. Perhaps a new book idea for Mr. Tickoo? Finally, for the novice, patience and experimenting are the keys to successfully learning a new computer application. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and easy-to-follow methodology
Sham Tickoo writes from the standpoint of someone very familiar with the subject as he apparently is. The book represents a very easy-to-follow, step-by-step methodology, which is suitable even for complete beginners. The author covers the theory first and then illustrates it with appropriate tutorials. At the end of each chapter there are self-evaluation questions and exercises.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a novice
I started learning proe wildfire when my project manager asked me to do so because I had to work on a project. With some solid modeling experience and this book in hand, I started doing it. I must say that it is because of this book that I was able to learn the software so easily and must importantly, I did not take much time. The chapters in this book are perfectly arranged. The layout of this book is the main reason I was able to learn the software. Well done author, keep up the good work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire for Designers by Sham Tickoo
This book is definitely helpful (would you believe essential) in learning Pro/engineer Wildfire. It achieves a good balance between reference material and tutorial examples (as compared to Lamit's books which are mostly tutorial with CadTrain screen prints and step by step instructions, but with a good index).
4-0 out of 5 stars Terrible index
Terrible index and wordy. Good tutorial, but not good as a reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but verbose
The book is good, both for an experienced user migrating to Wildfire and a newbie. The author teaches the software on a step by step basis, followed by a thorough tutorial at the end of the chapters. The tutorials are useful, might as well skip the preceding sections and jump right at these to learn the software.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book to learn ,but you get free 60-day tryout edition
This book is not good for anyone. It has very few practice excerises and it skips lot of necessary steps which you have to figure it out by trail and error method.I found it very bugging .You get a 60 day trail version ,but the catch is it's a student version and has less capability than a commercial one.
2-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE - Not A Good Tutorial
I was reading these reviews less than 2 months ago preparing for a graduate school class in which Pro-E was used, I never used Pro-E before (just AutoCAD).I ignored the one bad rating on this tutorial and bought it.What a mistake!!!This book will only give you headaches. The topics are very specific, it starts with a given part and makes some specific changes (which may be good for advanced work, NOT for a beginner).NO sections on just basic operations like sketches or making basic lines/curves.Many examples skip steps and you have to guess your way through. No explanations of core functions, like constrains (a function not familar to an AutoCAD user).LOOK FOR ANOTHER TUTORIAL!! Or just use the "Free" Pro-E help which I am now doing and it works quite well.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good ProE text !!
I am currently teaching ProE using this book as the main text.It has been written for learning ProE from a beginning level. It starts off with a chapter (Lesson) containing eight models that most students can complete in a few hours.Like running downhill, this really builds confidence and zeal in students.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book: A Big Mistake
I purchased this book to enhance my knowledge of Pro/E. I have been using Pro/E for over 6 years. Purchasing this book was a big mistake and a waste of my time. This book is very second-rate.The instructions and procedures in each chapter are not clear, correct nor complete. The quality of the illustrations are poor.It looks like the book was produced on a copier machine.
1-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Tutorial
I've used many different CAD systems for over twenty years. And, now I'm learning Pro E.This book is very disappointing for several reasons.First of all, the instructions for each example are not complete and very difficult to follow. And, there are very few pictures of the command menus.Worst of all, the parameters of each command are not well explained as to how they relate to each part example. And, it has no Index. So, it is difficult to use as a reference.I've decided not to continue using this book and to look for something else that is less frustrating to use.If any of you know a really good Pro E tutorial, please let me know...

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book but........
After completing this book you would have developed a fair amount of working knowledge. But the exercises given in this book leave you irritated by the time you reach its assembly. Too many errors. The drawings provided for components are at the best misleading (not all). You start assembling and you wonder why they are not constraining properly - that's coz u got the dimensioning wrong. At first I started documenting errors. But midway just gave up as it's an unending saga. While practicing the tutorials, if you skip through paragraphs, you would definitely miss something or the other. So you have to read each and every line with utmost attention. To be fair, if you have time, this is a good book.... but again it could be much better. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Best Pro Engineer Book Available
While fairly good at describing how to use the tools available in Pro-E, the Definitions and explanations of conceptual use of these tools is lacking. I do not recommend this book for people who are trying to learn Pro Engineer on their own. Use of this book is best in an setting where an experienced user or instructor are available for assistance.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very Bad buy, software is sheer torture
I bought this book with the intent of studying and learning. But..it wouldn't activate. After some help from PTC and resetting the URL to the right version it loaded, including the license activation. OOPS! the CDs are outdated, program shuts down. (No help whatsoever from PTC with this issue, they're clueless). Getting hold of the author, 2 new CDs are sent out immediately (But I did pay for the postage). The CDs are loaded, ProEngineer starts up, but can't download ANY of the files that the books uses for lessons because the new student version is inhibited. While the book gives good instructions, the rest is just pure incompetence. This course will teach you to really hate ProE before you even start to learn it, and frankly compared to Solidworks and Inventor Version 8, this is some seriously outdated software with weird file structures that tells me I'm running a mad mix of old software and patches to make it look "new". Just awful. I might get it working but I've been struggling with it for some 10 days now. I feel like I've been ripped off and if I don't get it working soon I want my money back from Amazon.com

1-0 out of 5 stars Software doesn't work
Software doesnt work and PTC is not taking responsibilty for this. Without the software this book is worth $20. I am absolutely disgusted with what I got after paying $95. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent ProE Introduction
I am a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of New Hampshire. I used this book to introduce a Freshman level design course to the use of Pro/Engineer. I selected this one based on its thoughtful step-by-step approach. Toogood also keeps his book up to date with a new edition for each new release of ProE.The reaction from the students in the class is generally positive and they are able to progress through the ten lessons at the rate of about one per week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tutorial Book
I just started using ProE at work and this book was very helpful in teaching me the fundamentals of Pro-E 2000i2.The click by click examples are easy to follow. The book shows you the most common commands that you'll use when you start designing your first parts.I recommend you practice some of the projects in this book before you take the week long "Fundamentals of Pro Engineer" course offered by PTC.The fast paced course can become very frustrating if you are completely new to ProE.This book also has very few text errors. The book's CD demonstrations are also helpful.Overall, I am very satisfied with my first ProE book.

4-0 out of 5 stars I bought this book for a class
I am pretty good at AutoCAD 14. Some projects at work use AutoCAD. However we have an expanding repertoire of Pro-engineer files. I do not need to use Pro-engineer, as I am a Sr. Systems Analyst in the Information Systems department. However I occasionally need to converse with R&D. this book makes it much easier to communicate without having to translate.

3-0 out of 5 stars Review of advanced techniques
This book is OK if you are a Pro/e user with moderate experience. Itexplains about start parts - which I've found to be lacking in all the proeusers I've met for exaample. Also the assembly techniques are ok. I wouldtake exception to the book being aimed at advanced users. Anyone who hasused proe extensively will find this book unfulfilling. Also it containslittle or no reference to sheetmetal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a good Pro E book
I have bought about 4 books now on Pro/E. First two were introductory and that was fine because i was just starting to learn Pro/E.The other two were junk. However, this book is great. The book is definetly designed fora user who has already covered the basics. If your just learning, startwith some basic tutorial books and then get this one.Shows some real goodstuff and well laid out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Techniques for today
I felt this book was well written and easy to understand. We all know how boring technical literature can be and how difficult some examples are to follow. This book gives clear step-by-step direction that is straight tothe point and delivers a message of not only advanced techniques, but alsoof proper modeling and design fundamentals. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Inaccuracies w/r to Wildfire Release 2.0
The book explains the mechanics of how to perform basic operations with Wildfire very well, in the first half of the book. However, more complex or higher level operations are sometimes inaccurate, having incorrect or missing steps, or poorly explained in later chapters. This includes some of what the book refers to as advanced drawing and modeling tools. It is quite frustrating to follow the directions given in the text only to find the software does not perform the task as described. In addition, the text gives no clue how to recover from mistakes. Thus, the user is often forced to closeout of the model/drawing completely and start from scratch, or the last save, assuming the application has not locked-up the computer. There is no coverage of sheetmetal modeling techniques, either.
1-0 out of 5 stars This book makes baby jesus cry
This book is the biggest load of donkey excrement I have ever had the displeasure to lay my eyes on. I am a computer scientist, so I'm used to reading some pretty crappy documentation, but the only thing less informative and useful than this book was the help file that comes with the application.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just not much here
I am in between a novice/intermediate user level in Pro E 20. I have a small background in plastics injection molding but mostly silicone molding. This book spends most of the time explaining basic injection molding design (things like draft, runners, core/cavity). But very the discussionof these features is very basic and mostely antedotal. You could learnjust about everything covered in this book in about 1 hour talking with amold designer and probably alot more with the mold designer. If you havebeen commissioned to start designing molds then you will need a hell ofalot more then this book offers you.The final section of the book haswork excercises designing parts. But it just tells you to design someparts on Pro E, NOT how to use Pro E to design the parts. I have doneseveral tutorials that cover general features of Pro E but was looking forsomething that gave some new features in Pro E and HOW tos on thosefeatures. Not in this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Tutuorial?
I read the first review and purchased the book.I do not think that this book is very helpful for a novice nor an Intermediate user.I was extremely surprised with the lack of quality and fundamentals in the book. The book is assuming a lot and has numerous problems with location of the information and the extremely poor quality screen shots. It is very difficult to follow and understand. It almost seems like it was written by a person not knows the information, but can't teach it. If you like a wordy book, with mistakes and extremely poor quality screen shots, this is the book for you.If not, shop around for another book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner
This book is good for a novice, say Beginner to Intermediate user. It does a thorough job of telling you how to go about an analysis step by step using the Integrated mode of Pro/MECHANICA and Pro/E Wildfire. If you are an ace at any other FEA tool, then you may not need any book to learn Pro/MECHANICA, its easy. If you have to do non-linear analysis, then this is neither the book nor is Pro/MECHANICA the right software to use.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Toogood=Toobad
I found this tutorial to be the most incomplete and confusing manual I've seen in a long time. It's pretty obvious to me that the text was not proved out by inexperienced users prior to publication nor was it proofed by the author. There is a lot of extraneous verbiage that is not germane to the information presented, as well as sections missing, not enough pictures of the menu structure layout and no index to help find commands. Also very little useful info regarding how to correct mistakes and how to continue a model after quitting out of it in the middle of the entry of information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete and lacking index.
Of the ProE books that I have used I find this one of the most frustrating. I find Toogoods methodology in this book to be fairly limited in its usefulness. The book should not be considered a self-guided tutorial. He has made the dimensioning almost unreadable and completely invisible on some parts. One must search the rest of the book to find the correct dimensions. He also leaves out sections of directions, which may be alright for a class situation, but for someone trying to teach themselves in a professional environment it eats up to much time away from productivity. It is inexcusable that this book was released in this state of being. I also think that Toogood and PTC could at least put indexes in their books. It is almost impossible to find anything quickly. This book is not to good. If PTC does not shape up and correct this type of unprofessional approach it may lose the market share it gained from Autodesk to their new Inventor program. Anyway, enough of my two cents. You would be much better off using Lamit's book. It is more complete and in-depth and it has an index!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good skills builder
This book does an excellent job of teaching intermediate to advanced techniques. The project parts that are at the end of each chapter do an outstanding job of reinforcing the knowledge gained in the chapter, however the author assumes that you have a pretty good handle on basic techniques. In other words, not everything you need to know to complete the project is in the book, but I know I've learned more by working it out for myself then if this were simply a Pro/E cookbook. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Just a badddddd book!
The book is just bad. I agree with most of the other reviewers. The exercises are poor, the quality of the pictures is even worst and the book is too wordy and vague.I think Roger likes to hear himself talk in a roundabout manner. This is just a bad book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Widely Used for Pro/ENGINEER training
Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Tutorial and MultiMedia CD is really two books in one.The text portion is tutorial in style and is designed to illustrate the features of Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire. The MultiMedia CD, that is included with the book, contains an audio/visual presentation of the tutorial exercises contained in the book.A good approach to this book is to first view the CD to get a feel for how the software looks, then work through the tutorial exercises.1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality
The book is just bad. Most exercises have no dimensions on them so you are really estimating dimensions and remembering them as u go along developing the part. This is OK with simple parts but with complex parts it would be nice to have dimensions. With dimensions one can compare the the part with the pictorial provided in the book - that gives the user an idea whether he/she modelled the part right. Sometimes it is possible to do the wrong thing and still get something that looks similar but is wrong. Dimensions quantize the end result and the user can know for SURE if the work done was right. In CAD its either a 100% right or 100% wrong especially if the error is in a key feature that is going to be mated with another part.Read more
