5-0 out of 5 stars The Best on the Graphic Design Industry
The Best. It was so good, it inspired me to come back and write my first book review ever. This book answered numerous questions I had and confirmed just as many assumptions I had about the Graphic Design Industry. Shaughnessy has done a huge service to the graphic design world by writing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential that any graphic designer operating independently have this practical reference
Graphic designers love to talk about sources of inspiration, but less willing to discuss the basics on locating work, pricing, and how to handle irate or non-paying clients - so it's essential that any graphic designer operating independently have this practical reference. It's one thing to be creative; it's another to manage its business needs. How To Be A Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul provides tested strategies for setting up, running and promoting a studio - and working with clients and their common problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for graphic designers, must read for all design students
If you are in commercial art field, regardless whether you are in graphic design or not, you must read this book. It tell you everything you wish your design school teachers had told you about the business of being a commercial artist. As an art school instructor myself, I made this book into a recommended reading material for my graduating illustration majors. Just cross the words "design" in this book and write over "illustration" (or animation, advertising, or whichever commercial art occupation), and more than 95% of it works. It is because this book does not teach you the tricks and gimmicks, but teaches you the philosophy of the business of being a commercial artist. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Survive and Prosper As an Artist: Selling Yourself Without Selling Your Soul
WOW, WOW, WOW. Get this book! This has (just about) everything you need to be professional. The only thing I didn't like is that most of the resources listed were geared to NYC residents, but there was good direction as to how to locate similar services in your area. I especially liked the opening that deals with how artists are helping to perpetuate their own "starving artist" myth, and the ways to stop that. It made me realize that I am the one standing in the way of my own success! Well, no more--thanks to Caroll--I am taking all of the steps listed. I wish my graduate school had this information available!

5-0 out of 5 stars really helpful
this book was really helpful in understanding how much marketing work is involved with doing art. it's a little intimidating to think that you will need to write press-releases for everything you do. but thats' the truth i guess if you want to play the game. that is if you want to play by and set your own rules instead of just being a tool for the whims of gallerists and dealers.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am so glad I bought this book!
I have never been one to read self-help books, but, as an artist just beginning to market my work, I felt helpless and uninformed. I am so glad I bought this book - Ms. Michels demystifies the business process in a pragmatic and often humorous way. I now feel I have a clearer picture of where I'm going and how I'm going to get there, as well as having more confidence in myself and less awe of the art world.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Resource
I loved this workbook...excellent ideas in a painless, creative and fun format!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard work but worthwhile
It seems that many of us who are artists are content to languish undiscovered, to deluge our relatives with gorgeous handmade cards and crafts, and/or to feel that we're really not good enough and motivated enough to sell our work - after all, we'd have been discovered if it was THAT good. This book will require you to answer questions and use a calculator, but once you've finished it you will have a marketing plan for your work - and you will feel that your work deserves it.You are neither too good for selling, nor not-good enough for it either. You can do it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not much concept art of early golden Disney animation period
It is a great book when you want to learn about collors and style in Disney park design, but not much on the period of Dumbo animation and other early disney design and concept art for animation in the golden period of disney animation. Still great paintings and Aquarels (study the techniques) from traveling and the design paintings, for the disney world themeparks. It gave me the Idear of buying a sketchbook for my world traveling.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough Disney
I hate to sound like an ingrate writing this review:Herb Ryman has done some great illustrations.Unfortunately, this book spends too much time showcasing Herb Ryman's non-Disney art--which is pretty mediocre--and not enough space showcasing his Disney work. The highlight of the book--Ryman's first illustration of the soon-to-be-built Disneyland--is spread across two pages, but the page break makes it nearly impossible to decipher what's in the middle of the drawing.(It should have perhaps been on a fold-out, or at least on a single, uninterrupted page.)Other great illustrations, especially early renderings of Tomorrowland, are printed in extremely small 3" images, making them very hard to read. All in all, I'd say don't bother with this book.Ryman's best drawings are already showcased in many other books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not so much for Disney historians...
As a general book about the person Herb Ryman, it is very pretty and well made, and deserves 5 stars.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect item of choice for any who dream of breaking into the business
If it's an animation career you're aiming for, don't set your sights without consulting YOUR CAREER IN ANIMATION: HOW TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE. Animation is now a big-ticket industry to be in offering big opportunities for new artists - but conversely, it offers far more complexities than in the past. 100 professionals from the industry provide their tips and experiences through interviews with an award-winning filmmaker, creating a comprehensive guide that follows a career from school to the real world. From networking tactics to unemployment and learning on the job, YOUR CAREER IN ANIMATION is the perfect item of choice for any who dream of breaking into the business.
5-0 out of 5 stars ALL Animators should read this
I have been engaged with animation for over 10 years now.It is a lifestyle that if one is to embrace it as a career, one understands that not every day is drawing funny pictures in sequential order and making a living. It is a lifestyle that requires a great deal of passion, but a good sense of aspects that go beyond the desktop computer or drawing board.Your Career in Animation: How to Survive and Thrive is an excellent read for any person who takes the career of animation as seriously. He discusses the parts of this career that many have yet to witness and interact with.I know that many of his stories of angst and frustration are true to form because I have been in those very same positions; contracts, work environment, burning bridges categories, etc.I do not read books every day, but I found myself surfing this book quickly because if you are someone who truly truly wants a life in this business as I do...take it from me, David has been there. He writes on a very personable level and communicates his thoughts as humanly as possible without pulling punches and not hitting you too hard with the truth that comes with this life.If you are an animator and you take even a hint of this career seriously, you would be a fool not to pick this book up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone considering a career in animation.
John Serpentelli, my son's mentor in the industry, gave this book to him as a parting piece of wisdom. He's off to college this fall. I picked it up and couldn't put it down. Levy shares invaluable information about the industry...what it's really like, as well as the importance of networking and nurturing relationships.Serpentelli took my son to a festival in Japan while still in lower school to receive an animation award. Were we crazy to let him go? Maybe...but there he made his first connection...an afternoon with Ray Harryhausen which he has never forgotten and even included in his college application. From a true insiders perspective Levy also covers the realities and the basics of job hunting.Even if you are not in the animation industry Levy's book is a must read...Sending the resume and/or an email just isn't enough to land the job! Thank you David. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars 187 Tips for Artists
If you are looking for insight on how to build your business, this is not the right book.It may be useful for young people or emerging artists. Many of the tips are related to life skills. The tips are presented simplisticly. They are not particularly helpful for artists already in the marketplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and straight to the point!
If you are looking for some sort of textbook to surviving as an artist, then this is not it. It is true that each page contains one tip and less than a paragraph of text, but I find this is perfect for my artist husband who will not read a lengthy, drawn out book. This little book can be read within an hour and contains many useful tips on how to price your work, write your bio, get out of a block, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Proof Less is More
Unlike other books, and I read a lot, this book doesn't put you through mindless reading about this, that, and the other in order to get to the point. Some pages may have you thinking "Well that's a no-brainer," but are you doing it? I found the no-brainers were the items I most needed to start doing, like introducing my self as an Artist. This book will remind you of things you need to do, get you thinking about things you may not have realized you needed to do, and you don't have to enjoy reading to get all the benefits of the book.Simple thought provoking sentences are a sure way to benefit any busy artist.I like how I can open a page any day, at any time and be inspired to do something important to benefit my career as an artist.I love the book, I think every artist, at any stage in there career can benefit from this book.I think the price is reasonable and would make a great gift for any artist as well as yourself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tells of a hobby gone wrong and packs in all the detail and excitement of a true adventure read
In the early heyday of ebay bidders flooded the site willing to buy nearly everything - among them art collectors who hoped to buy bargains and rarities from less educated listers. FAKE describes the actions of one Kenneth Walton, a lawyer who was not only seduced by an online con artist, but who become one himself. From his initial hobby as an online art-trading hobbyist to his entry into a world of fraud and selling fakes which would lead to a federal felony conviction, FAKE: HOW ONE MAN'S CON GAME CREATED AN INTERNATIONAL SCANDAL AND TRIGGERED A NATIONWIDE FBI HUNT tells of a hobby gone wrong and packs in all the detail and excitement of a true adventure read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction of the arts market
Iain Robertson et al. is presenting this very sound introduction to the non-expert of the arts international market. It is a collection of articles from different authors; therefore expect a non-linear writing style, which is however easy to understand. It is written from the point of view of the curator, or of someone who stands outside the market as an observer. What one could find as missing, are other perspectives such as the artist themselves. Nevertheless, this book discusses a very wide range of the arts market and even includes chapters such as art crime. The reader can thus easily gain a very good (though theoretical) insight of how the arts market works and of who are the actors in the market.

I heartily recommend this book to any artist wishing to enter the print market. I'm thrilled to have found it, read it, and look forward to sharing it with my clients. As far as I know, it's one of a kind. "How to Profit . . . " demystifies the print world for readers. It's a great reference for who you need to know and where you need to go. I also very much appreciate Davey's frankness. He speaks with genuine authority.

5-0 out of 5 stars Here's the Answers from the Horse's Mouth...
So much of what you read today concerning any business advice comes from the other end of the horse. But Barney's book is a must-read simply because he was in the art business for nearly 20 years! He knows about art--from how to make it to how to sell it.If you're an artist looking to represent himself or herself, this book's wisdom is invaluable. It's been my experience, having also been in the art business for 13 years, that most artists don't know how to market themselves or sell their stuff.A lot of the art you see isn't necessarily the best of what's out there, it's just better marketed than some of the other stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars A heartfelt and personal guide for artists
Mr. Dorrell offers a personable, inspirational guide to personal success as an artist, using a self-deprecating, humorous, and sincere memoir of his own journey as an art dealer and writer. This book was insightful and truly conveyed the author's love for his work and his artistic clients, as well as his desire to assist aspiring artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pushing the boundaries in the art world
Paul's book is written with style and humor. This career we've chosen is not an easy one, and this book gives practical advice and "insider information" about how to deal with critics, rejection and snobbery. He doesn't dwell on the negative, but gives inspiration and great advice on how to be succesful as an artist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Profound and Inspiring
I wish I had found this book when I was a student; it's profound in its basic approach. I now have a modest reputation as a painter, however, the preamble suggested in the book was not suggested when I was younger. This should be a must-read for every art student and made available in every library.I was particularly interested in the discussions of depression, perseverance, and marketing one's work with dignity.I thought I would never read another "how-to" book, but this work changed my mind.

Steven Heller & Marshall Arisman's guidance is invaluable in today's market, this book is a must have for the struggling professional or for the newly graduate seeking to stake their claim. In fact I'd go so far as to say this book SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING at every art school in the country offering illustration courses.
