5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I thought this book was very good. It was informative and easy to use. The author really broke down the steps-- the photgraphs also helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a gem!
Finally, a book devoted to a topic not covered well, if at all, in the other art books I've looked at. It's well written with very helpful, clear photos of the techniques covered. I also enjoyed the style of writing and the author's sense of humor. I've read and reread the book several times!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
It is beautifully done with the author's artworks. But it didn't help me with my brush stroke. Not many examples on how to express form and texture. ... Read more

I have started reading this book, so be warned.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise and practical...
This book rocks.Color Design Workbook is exactly what it's title suggests: A Real-World approach to color theory. It breaks down color theory in a totally useful way and has plenty of eye candy for inspiration. It has a bunch of sample projects to walk you through actual applications of the theories it describes. It's like a really smart, down-to-earth graphic designer (and in the case of this book -- world-class graphic designers) whispering trade-secrets into your ear.Definitely one of my favorite books on this subject. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Covers the subject like a favorite blanket
I have to say I am not a true believer,in that all the worlds ills can be cured with a look tru a kaleidoscope. I did find the book well done, nice layout, crisp bright pictures. It also started with history, and progressed thru the current crop of people building and experimenting with the scopes. Ms. Baker does a very good job of covering all the aspects of the in's and outs of the different scopes and mirror set ups. Gives the reader looking for only entertainment. Just enough information on any of the chapter subjects to make it clear and then moves on to the next.
5-0 out of 5 stars Trult Inspirational
A friend of mine, kaleidoscope artist Roy Cohen-Gilad, received this book from Cozy Baker herself, who complimented him on his artistry and beautiful handmade kaleidoscopes. The images are inspiring, the story touching, and overall this beautiful book provides us with a glimpse of understanding why countless people are thus fascinated with this extraodinary form of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Heaven for Kaleidoscope Lovers'
I have everyone of Cozy Baker's books. Each one is worth at least five stars. I didn't think Cozy could improve on her last book full of the festive colors and imaginations of kaleidoscopes and their makers', but she certainly has. I am a devote lover of kaleidoscopes and have been collecting them since 1982. My collection must be over 300 scopes by now. Everyone of them is completely original, beautiful, and loved by my family and I. I am always looking for more information regarding the artists and "industry" of kaleidoscopes. This book is filled with just that kind of information. I 've been collecting for over 22 years, but found out there is a lot I didn't know about my passion and the creator's that have made a difference in creating it. The one thing I never knew until I read this book was that these exciting, talented artists started out as collectors', just like me. I always assumed it was the artist's talent in either glass, marble, brass, wood, ect. that led them into saying "maybe I should try usingmy art to make a kaleidoscope". This book has taught me that all these spectacular artists are not only "artists", but "scope lover's as well. This book is a gem and you get to see and learn at the same time. Pure enjoyment! Just the same as when you look at a kaleidoscope. I love this book and it will be added as part of my collection and enjoyed forever! Thank you, Cozy Baker, you are indeed the "First Lady of Kaleidoscopes". All of your hard work and honest love for this craft shows brilliantly in this new book. The book deserves as many "stars" as when you look at a "star" with a teleidoscope. You "scope lovers'" will know exactly what I mean!Read more

I adore this book! It's an oversize publication which increases the beauty of the photography. The photos of the Duchess'jewelry are breathtaking, and it also provides a full account of the famed auction, including the amounts paid for the jewelry. There are great pictures of celebrities who purchased some of the pieces. There's even a stunning photo of Liz Taylor wearing the Prince of Wales Plume Pin for which she paid over $500,000. It also recounts the story of their lives along with pictures, including copies of newspaper clippings during the abdication. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Duke and Duchess or the forthcoming auction of the Windsor's household possessions at Sothebys. This book is the jewel in my collection of royal books! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great and Beautiful Manual!
It is a beautiful book with easy to follow instructions arranged in a very organized way to help a student progress step by step. The spiral binding inside the traditional binding cover also makes it really easy to actually use this manual. It stays open flat on your table for easy reference while not looking cheap when standing in a bookcase. This book is actually worth buying and keeping.Unlike a lot of others, it doesn't disappoint and is truly informative rather than just being another pretty flower book.

I highly recommend this book.I first read "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and this book is a great follow up to it for anyone who thinks they cannot draw!I could hardly draw legible stick figures and now carry a sketch book with me wherever I go.Mr. Metzger has a way of writing that seems to speak to you at whatever level you are at in drawing. His examples are excellant.Tips abound.GET THIS BOOK!

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!!
This book is definitely a hidden treasure! The first half of the book goes over basic skills and techniques, design, perspective...the essentials. Then each subsequent chapter tackles a specific aspect of landscape drawings; trees, water, buildings, animals...I mean it covers it all. I am currently a Landscape Architecture student and picked up this book as a way to boost my skills. If you read through it and follow the tips you will be surprised at your progress. Once again, Highly Recommended! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful problem-solver
This book is not so much a "how-to" or beginner's guide as it is a useful problem-solver for various texture challenges a watercolor artist may face. From painting fruit to fur, metal to dirt, fields of grass to whitewater rapids, the author presents many full-color, illustrated examples and notes on how to proceed. After a few pages of basic paper and application notes, the book goes right into texturing, sometimes with step-by-step illustrations, other times with notes provided on a finished painting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Details
This book offers wonderful step by step instruction with plenty of visual references.A perfect hands on tool for learning to work with watercolor.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my most prized technique books
When Ms. Johnson called this a book of textures, she wasn't kidding. She doesn't fool around with page after page of the oft-repeated list of materials, etc., but gets right down to textures.

3-0 out of 5 stars IT COULD BE BETTER
Bruno Lucchesi's book is interestingthough it could be better if it were in colored photos. I also wonder how he removes the newspaper inside after the sculpture is ready - he doesn't show. While making the hair, he doesn't claim the attention to the serious problems of the bubbles which can explode the piece... Despite all this, it's a good book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not For the Beginner...or the Advanced?
For a beginning sculptor, Lucchesi leaves a lot of steps out, the gaps are difficult to overcome for the starter.I also found that it was difficult to apply the techniques when trying to create an actual likeness.....much of Lucchesi's work appears to be very similar in shape and form.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Pass This One Up
I am interested primarily in learning figure sculpture, so I bought this as a companion to the volumes "Modeling the Figure in Clay" and "Terracotta."I must say I was not disappointed. The book is a walkthrough of a single sculpture, but it is not developed in the anatomical style taught in "Modeling the Figure in Clay."Students of portraiture may prefer a more detailed treatment of facial anatomy. However, the work shown in the book has the grace and "flow" which is so difficult for beginners to master -- and which is tough to learn without viewing the piece as an integrated whole. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book of techniques
As a collage artist, I own many books on collage techniques. This one is especially nice because is presents many established artists and their techniques vs. one artist showing all his or her own work. The materials lists and photos of a work-in-progress are also excellent. This is not a craft book, but for those serious about art making.

5-0 out of 5 stars Collage /Mixed Media book for arists
This gave a great range of techniques and effects for both collage and mixed media. Oddly enough this is the best sourse of mixed media approaches that I have yet seen in any book currently in print. The techniques are clearly and comprehensively explained and the illustrations are perfect. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars This one was juuuust right..
Being new to the area of collage, I have been searching out interesting and inpirational books from which to 'get the motor reving' so-to-speak.I've felt like Goldilocks in the Bear's house looking at some of the available materials."This one is too short, this one is too weird, this one is too singular, this one has no background or wisdom to offer..."But, ah! this one, Collage Techniques, is just right.I found the educational and historical perspectives to be useful and interesting to read, as well as the lessons and explainations. The author uses many good examples that come from a variety of sources, so it is possible to look through and say, "Yes, that's the skill or portrayal that I'm looking for."Collage Techniques doesn't get dry or repetative, nor does it foist a single technique upon the reader. It is an older book, but in-my-opinion, a more comprehensive one than many of the newer collage books.I recommend it very highly. ... Beautifully presented book and worth every penny. However, patience is needed by the bucket load and I suggest to have taken lessons before trying these lovely paintings.Once you know how the world is your oyster .

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of information!
This is my favorite One Stroke book thus far. However, I had already purchased her video "flowers for all seasons" and the "one stroke painting course" and "easy murals" books, so I had a feel for the basics. Her books tend to have some of the same information in each (which I find annoying), but "flowers A to Z" has a lot of variety, so you can learn a lot of techniques just by going through and trying the different flowers. I disagree with the reviewer who claimed the pictures are of poor quality...they look fine to me.Overall, I think this book is a good value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For artists
For the Artist who knows what he or she is at and its certainly not for the hobbiest who would be lost with this book. This for me is a great book as it has enrichened me....information is always good.I am delighted to have it. a worthy addition in any collection.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for serious arists
The language, as inaccurately mentioned in one of the previous reviews, is not that difficult at all. This is not a book for complete beginners, but definitely a must for anyone who considers himself serious as an artist. It provides a very detailed insight into the preparation of materials, the handling of paints and reveals numerous techniques, which were employed by the great masters (not only Renaissance and Baroque, but 18 and 19th century painters and some of the impressionists). There is a separate chapter dedicated entirely to the technique of the old masters.Though, the only drawback I find in this book is that it doesn't spend more time on any of the old masters in particular (it explains their technique quite superficially at times, and only touches the surface when it comes to some of them, so don't expect this book to be about the old masters' technique - it is about technique in general; "the proper way to paint" if you will, with numerous specific examples throughout on how different painters employed this or that method).3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but cumbersome language
As a novice painter (hobbyist) with great admiration for the works of the Great Masters, I purchased this as a textbook to help me understand the great works as well as to learn proper technique.Given my "real world" schedule, it would be impossible to get to a proper art class, so this was to be a compromise. It is full of fascinating historical details, but the language used is often so cumbersome it's difficult to follow unless one has either a great deal of concentration, some prior experience with the subject under discussion, or both. The lack of illustrations is also a barrier to using this as a primary textbook.Mayer's book ("The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques") is written in a much clearer style and covers more modern materials as well as those of the greats. In sum, this is a very good book to have in one's library, but if you are looking for a primary text, use Mayer's instead. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars not for an advanced artist
While Leslie writes beautifully, the only real information I learned from this book was which pastels held the best lightfastness rating and one technique of scratching I hadn't yet considered. Other than that, this book is geared very much towards beginners of oil pastel. All of the beautifully colored pieces he has pictures tend to lean towards abstract and illustrative ideas and expressions vs. more realistic interpretations of things. Additionally as a result there's really no other meathod to learn from in this book. He brushes against the ability to make realistic pictures via one artist, but goes into no detail as to how she accomplishes this task. The other great disappointment to me was Leslie's work itself. All of his works shown throughout could have been created by a High school student. He shows no real ability or understanding of how this medium can be worked. I would not recommend this book at it's original price of $32 and especially would not recommend spending double that for a used out of print copy. Save your money and check it out at the library or look for more informationon the internet.

I always wanted to be an artist, and with Donna's easy-to-follow techniques, I can now paint! Before, I drew rotten stick figures, but Donna had me painting like a pro in nothing flat!I have given items away as gifts, and have had requests for items!I've been concentrating on clay flower pots, but I now feel ready to branch out to bigger and better things! Thanks Donna!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is it if you have to be a jack of all trades in your art department.
There are not many books out there which is specifically for secondary level. A very resourceful book to have especially when you are in a sole charge department and have to teach across the different art fields at secondary level. It is also handy for those days when your mind goes blank and you have to come up with some quick exercises. Once you have gained confidence, you can also adapt them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Handy
As a beginner teacher I found this book useful to fill in gaps in my own knowledge. It has step by step instructions for all basic art programs and is a good benchmark for when you are setting up your own programs. Things like plaster casting, clay modeling, pinhole photography, watercolours etc all have units of work.Although I did not use whole units I did use parts of the program to help create a foundation for my own work. Not a book you'd use everyday, but definately handy. I wish I had found it in my first year of teaching!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book for advanced art classes, but not for studio art
As a first year teacher I bought this book to help me out with the school year. There are many good projects in here for advanced classes, such as drawing and painting, sculpture, etc. However in this day in age its really sad that half the projects I would want to do for my studio classes I can't because they involve using knives, irons, etc. Its just to dangerous and I hate I have to think about my students stealing knives. Overall this book is great if you are able to teach advanced classes at the High School level. I would not recommend this book if you teach regular studio. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Art Teacher's review
I've done many of these projects with children, and they are both educational (the book gives some cultural and historical references on the projects) and a cut above some of the really simplistic projects found in a lot of books. I go back to it again and again! I'd highly recommend it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Themes, themes, themes
20 Master Plots is the perfect addition to the library of any aspiring writer. This book takes you through twenty different plot themes, with a note in mind on what the plot theme is, and how to implement it in the Three Act structure.
1-0 out of 5 stars Big on promises, short on delivery
I'm afraid this book has very little to recommend it. Not only is it out of touch with classical and contemporary literature on its subject of choice, all the master structures described aren't really plot structures either, but rather smaller narrative "motifs". And where are all the illustrative, helpful examples from literature and film to flesh out the descriptions? Probably in some other book.
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice survey of plots. Will get you started
I have been working on a mystery novel and I picked up 20 Master Plots to help me structure the story.Since I've already got my basic plot (Mystery) I was able to use the book to help me make sure that I had my ducks in a row.

5-0 out of 5 stars Here's the point
To S. Agulia....
2-0 out of 5 stars What's the point?
This book features photographs & a couple of sample pages from a select & varied group of people - some are artists, some are other professions. I thought the book would be an inspiration for journaling - I did not find it so. Many of the photo pages are unreadable and uninspiring. Felt it was a waste of time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Your Inspiration-no technique included but visually very pleasing
This book is a great glimpse into how people from different fields treat their journals. From putting them up on a pedestal to utilitarian jotting down of memos and thoughts.

2-0 out of 5 stars useless!
A book not good enough for beginners ...really more of a how-to-paint magazine lacking actual info on how to paint...better to study masters and take classes

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite edit
I edited this book many years ago and STILL consult it about color questions. (Yeah, I'm an editor, but I used to be an artist--one who, while I was still painting, desperately needed a book like this. And after that, needed it even more when I chose art history as my muse.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.
I have had this book for approximately 4 years, and it is one that I keep going back to time and time again.High quality art, with wonderful and interesting insite and commentary, this is a must for fans of contemporary art, or for artists themselves. Read more
