5-0 out of 5 stars The best coffee table book ever !!!
Recently I have found myself drawn to graphics of all kinds. Being a huge fan of Tashen books and seeing this book on their website I decided to order it. Now at $200.00 this was quite a big purchase but this book is incredible. The color plates are beautiful and the information about the designs is very complete as well as interesting. This is a huge book! I think it must weigh in the neighborhood of 10 lbs. It is not a book to take to the beach for alittle read. However, it is a book to get inspired by and it will inspire you no matter what your art medium is. This is a book that I will tresure for years to come and I am sure if you decide to invest in this book you will not be disapointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook!
I just started my summer class a few weeks ago, and I definitely agree with the instructor that it's a truly great textbook! It's not as pricey as I initially thought it was going to be and it has a ton of art information. The CD and timeline are kind of useless, but I would still use them to study for exams or quizzes. If you want to learn about art in SOOO many ways, get this book because it's a treat!

4-0 out of 5 stars chosen paintings shown several times
I got this book for a class, and besides just using it for tests, I haven't opened it much. Most of the paintings in the first few chapters are also the same paintings in the last few chapters, though, and I thought it would have more variations. However, the info in each section is concise, easy to read, and the whole book is a great introduction for the beginner to the study of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for the begining Artist or Art lover

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious!
Once again, Logo Lounge gives the most creative and innovative examples of logos anywhere in an unbelivably organized format. As a graphic designer specializing in logos, I find the Logo Lounge library and website completely indispensible. I enjoyed seeing the judges favorites and definitely have a few of my own. The Portraits and Sketches (profiles of specific designers & agencies, identities and their applications) are always interesting and inspiring but don't overwhelm the book as I like to get straight down to business and dive right into the Collections (zillions of great logo examples). I've been designing and collecting design & logo specific books since the 80's and NEVER have any books inspired me more than these. I don't think you really have to be a designer to enjoy this gallery of artwork, but you may just turn into one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic for Serious Art Students
This book is a classic. It is used as a textbook in Florence, Italy for serious drawing classes with excellent results.

5-0 out of 5 stars a treasury of lost teachings
This book is essential for those students who wish to study art seriously, and to make themselves capable enough draftmen in order to paint. It is a complete reproduction of the "fabled but rare" drawing course used in Gerome's studio in nineteenth century Paris, comprising multiple levels of cast drawings, master-copies and linear life-drawings designed specifically to train the student's eye for painting. 5-0 out of 5 stars a treasury of lost teachings

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly enlightening- great for beginners!
...it's a solid treatment on the basics of drawing, yet it's not geared towards my *main* interest: learning to draw from memory.
5-0 out of 5 stars An effective way to learn drawing !
I discover the book in a previous edition, and this one resume lots of experience and tips to help the aspirant "artist" in the process. It definitely help to supplement it with the workbook, but not necessary. I also had the opportunity to take the class this summer in Cambridge (UK) and I will sum it up in two words : It works !
5-0 out of 5 stars a great read
this book has alot of needless right brain/left brain info that to me is just there for page filling and with that said... this is pound for pound the best book on learning to SEE really well and really fast. I have many drawing books and this one really helped me alot as far as seeing goes after I finshed the book and all its exercises I was doing like like portrates for the first time in my life

4-0 out of 5 stars Body guide for art
Very good surce of material for developing paints, draws and even sculpture.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures, not much information
I was looking for a book that would give me real understanding of the way that muscles connect to bones and how they work in motion. This book doesn't do that, and some of the drawings of muscles are so stylized as to be almost useless -like the drawing of muscles of the shoulder on page 103, which seems to have been compressed vertically simply because it looks cooler that way.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, could use morefull body shots showing face
The photos and book are beautiful.I am happy with the book in that regard. Also it has a wealth of information necessary for a solid education in figure drawing. The transparent overlays of muscle over skeletal structure is great.I would have liked to have seen more full body shots, head to toe, with faces pointed towards the viewer.Really though, it is an invaluable addition to my artistic reference library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Spiritual in Art - an absolute winner!
I have owned this book for over twenty years and I never get tired of pouring over it again. It is an absolute treasure trove of information and is packed full of glorious illustrations- it's the one book I refuse to loan out. As an artist, this is the most important book in my collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars the spiritual in art: abstract painting 1890 - 1985
There is a fantastic quality to the compliation of works in the Spiritual in Art, that indicates a profound understanding of the mystical forces of inspiration involved with the process of artistic endeavor. The book chronicles the exhibition of the same name organized by Maurice Truchmanand Judi Freeman at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.Many of themajor artists of the 20th century are represented; Mondrian, Duchamps andKandinsky to name a few.The ideosyncratic spin to the show lies in theexamination of their work from a philospophical and spiritual standpointthat involves a more involved examination than is often given with thepopular criticism styles of art history - ie; socio-political andaesthetic. With the aid of this book, the reader gleans a more profoundunderstanding of the motivational forces at work in these artists whosecreations transport viewers to new worlds and dimensions with only aglance. ... I had no problems when ordering from this vendor. The book description was accurate.I had no problems and received the book prior to the estimated arrival date.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is crap-tacular!
If my sock drawer was organized like this book...there would never be a matching pair of socks. The old socks and the new socks would cling together in a wad of static electricity, making it painful to dare try and pull them apart and match them up in any other way. The book lacks fabric softener, and reading it is itchy torture.

4-0 out of 5 stars 50's Medical Terms meet the Modern Artist
This book was purchased as required for class. The verbage in the textbook is reminiscent of the types of medical textbooks originating from the 50's.However, once you get past that, the diagrams and sketches are very in depth and descriptive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book has everything and more as far as anatomy for artists goes. The book is complete with excellent illustrations from real pictures to life like illustrations that capture the essence and meaning in the human form as conceptualized by the artist. A definite must have for any artist intrested in the human form.

The New Ceative Artist by Nita Leyland is a very useful addition to the library of any painter, regardless of the medium he or she uses.It is especially good to read when you go through that period that every artist experiences, when you feel you have lost your essential creativity and feel you have nothing to say.

3-0 out of 5 stars Restoration of Paintings
As a private restorer/conservator I view this book as a good ffee table format overview of easel painting . This book must not be used as a guide for would berestorersPlease on't attempt to repair your antiquepainting using this book as your basis of knowledge.
5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough introduction
Rather technical, with many lovely color illustrations of the subject and techniques. This is a shwank reference for all manner of questions about restoration and reconstruction of paintings. You could learn much just from the pictures and captions.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very informative overview
I read this book when I was applying for a graduate program in the restoration of easel paintings.I needed to get a broad--but also reasonably in-depth--overview of types of damage to paintings and restoration and preservation techniques, and this book was great for that.It thoroughly covers all types of damage to paintings on panel and fabric support, along with corrective and preventive techniques. As I mentioned before, it covers a whole range of areas while still giving them sufficiently in-depth attention. There are tons of color illustrations that are invaluable in helping you understand what they're talking about.I didn't rate it five stars for two reasons:(1) it frequently describes the use of specialized equipment used by restorers, and if you're not familiar with this equipment it can be kind of difficult to completely follow what they're describing, and (2) it also doesn't have the most up-to-date information. Not that the information that is there is out of date by any means, but if you're interested in cutting-edge restoration theory, this book is not going to have it.But from what I gather, this book is one of the most highly regarded in the restoration field (the faculty of the program I applied to keeps it on-hand as a reference book).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars History of Modern Art : Painting, Sculpture, Architecture & Photography
This is the best art history book around; I got it in college in a course by Dr. Donald Kuspit at S.U.N.Y@ Stony Brook I have this book from 1990 and still to this day I use it as a reference. There is no stone left unturned with this book about modern art. I suggest it for all artists, students and professionals who are in the art field and for everyone who wants a good book on this subject. It is the best one out there!
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on its subject..
"History of Modern Art" is, in my opinion, the very best general overview of modern art (i.e., the last 125-150 years or so) published to this date.4-0 out of 5 stars Get yourself a BIG dictionary.
I just completed a 20th century art course here in Southern California with this book as the chosen textbook.I would consider it at the medium to advanced level. It was much cheaper on Amazon than the college bookstore or the museum store!Like the title of this review suggests, the authors were pre-occupied with their knowlege of uncommon words in the English Language.I would never encourage the "Dumbing down of America" but the word usage in this book is to the point of distraction. The new Oxford Essential Business and Office Dictionary makes it a point in it's forward to point out that usage like this is superfluous. Er, I mean needless. The reproduction is outstanding and the physical structure is very good.I have every intention of making this book part of my permanent collection. And yes, agreeing with the other reviewers above, it is heavy. But hey, with a few extra sit-ups and one or two extra laps and you'll be just fine.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have
this book just gets better and better with each edition. It's an absolute necessity for any artist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Information.
If this text were to reside in EVERY artist studio, and was referred to often, the world would be a better place. This book has been a standard reference, and in many instances a required text, for ages and for good reason. Get the revised 5th ed. but when you see earlier editions cheap, snatch them up as well. Information on things like older pigments has in some cases been dropped to make way for later additions; the handy oil index chart disappeared from the 3rd edition, that info is now included in the pigment descriptions and not near as handy; you get the idea. All this is understandable from an editor's pov but a loss non-the-less. Get the newest edition and refer to it often but don't neglect the older editions. Just because some info has been dropped doesn't necessarily mean it's obsolete or no longer relevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Survive and Prosper As an Artist: Selling Yourself Without Selling Your Soul
WOW, WOW, WOW. Get this book! This has (just about) everything you need to be professional. The only thing I didn't like is that most of the resources listed were geared to NYC residents, but there was good direction as to how to locate similar services in your area. I especially liked the opening that deals with how artists are helping to perpetuate their own "starving artist" myth, and the ways to stop that. It made me realize that I am the one standing in the way of my own success! Well, no more--thanks to Caroll--I am taking all of the steps listed. I wish my graduate school had this information available!

5-0 out of 5 stars really helpful
this book was really helpful in understanding how much marketing work is involved with doing art. it's a little intimidating to think that you will need to write press-releases for everything you do. but thats' the truth i guess if you want to play the game. that is if you want to play by and set your own rules instead of just being a tool for the whims of gallerists and dealers.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am so glad I bought this book!
I have never been one to read self-help books, but, as an artist just beginning to market my work, I felt helpless and uninformed. I am so glad I bought this book - Ms. Michels demystifies the business process in a pragmatic and often humorous way. I now feel I have a clearer picture of where I'm going and how I'm going to get there, as well as having more confidence in myself and less awe of the art world.
