Type Book that dilivers!
I've always looked at design books that showscase work from firms around the country and have always wondered: "What typeface is that?". I really love how in this book it actually tells you the typefaces used in all of the work. I also love the cover and the layout. If your in type and love graphic design, BUY THIS BOOK!

A great reference for both beginners and advanced potters
Making Marks is an excellent reference book that both beginners and advanced potters can benefit from.It delves into all aspects of potting, and not only illustrates the results that can be achieved, it provides the "how to" for many of the processes.Any potter who has this book in their library will never run out of ideas for creating unique pieces.

Books like this one -a definite necessity !
This is an exciting book, it is not just about painting marks on surfaces.The list of options is quite comprehensive from liquid slips, clay colour modifications, carving, underglazes,slip-trailing, lustre-ware and of course impressions and incisions made by tools.Robin Hopper is a master of clay due to the years he has be absorbed by it.He has used good quality work by various potters to display the different forms of decoration.
For the dabbler or those needing inspiration to try something new
While I'm relatively new to the art and craft of pottery, I beginning to find my own voice in my work.This book is helping me to think about differnet ways to express myself in my work.While I will probably never go out and buy a sand blaster or work with lusters, I know I have the inital reference source I need should I decide to go that way.

Want to know more about Mata Ortiz and its potters?
This is a great book for all that are curious about Mata Ortiz pottery and the people who make it. If you want to start collecting, it's a great book to have for a reference source. All artists mentioned in this book are of high caliber, as good, some even better than the Native American potters of the Southwest. At this time, these wares are also less expensive and affordable to most people. Hopefully they will be a good investment for the future.
Mata Ortiz Pottery
A wonderful collection of photographs combined with dialoge about this remote village in Mexico.It describes the journey to get there, then details the lives of the talented people who live there.The photogtaphy is outstanding.A must for any person collecting or thinking of collecting pottery from this village.

The Next Best Thing To Owning A Pot
Almost 40 years ago Juan Quesada from the village of Mata Ortiz in Chihuahua singlehandedly revived Casa Grande style pottery. This book is a beautifully illustrated account of his success, along with the other artists of the village who learned from him. Becoming familiar with these artists should lay to rest the notion held by many Americans that Mexican imports are second class. These paper-thin pots are as beautiful as any you will ever see. This book has color photographs of many of the potters from Mata Ortiz as well as pictures of their pots. There is information on how the pots are made-- they are all built by hand from native materials, painted with brushes made from the artists' children's hair and fired over cow dung.Read more

Herriman's line
There are precious few draughtsmen that can put line to paper in all of low/high art than he. he is a master. Take a look at "Archie and Mahitabel"; authored by the great Don Marquise.It simply does't get any better than his exquisite line

FINE ART? YOU !!! DECIDE
The mere act of arguing that comic art qualifies as "fine art" somehow legitimizes such nonproductive and ultimately meaningless distinctions. Yet this catalogue's obvious purpose is to somehow elevate, by force of such argument, the reputations of comic strip and comic book artists. Excellent Read! Worth every cent!

This book is expensive, inaccurate, and underwhelming.
Claire Shaeffer writes informative books about sewing and fabrics for the home sewer.Claire Shaeffer should have either stayed in the sewing industry or gained real experience in the garment industry before she dare charge $71 for a vacuous outsider's perspective of this so-called "apparel industry".The book has a generic text book tome and the corny needle and thread clip art screams "home sewer".There is nothing wrong with home sewing.I've been sewing since I was 10.Making clothes has been my quiet hobby and a source of unending fascination.The truth is: the garment industry doesn't want to deal with home sewers."Fashion" designers and home sewers both share ignorance and arrogance as annoying, unappealing traits.Anyone can doodle on a napkin, but who can construct it from a sketch, fit it right, and sew it up professionally, within your cost structure?Not a "fashion" designer or a home sewer can do that, yet they think that they are greater than the process for they are completely unaware of the process.The goal is to work well with the fashion and garment industries.If you are looking for this kind of information in this book, you won't find it. This is the type of book that should be used in schools for Merchandising OR Fashion Design. I cannot get over it's usefullness. Everything I wanted (and needed) to hear about about clothing manufacture is in this book! Fairchild Pubs could never publish such a USEFUL and INTELLIGENTLY WRITTEN book. Those bastards always make textbooks difficult to understand and fill them with meaningless JABBERWOCKY!! Half the time, they don't even have a decent glossary or INDEX (if there is one at all) whereas Claire it seems, has given us the full tour. Peripheral data you could care less about is not here!! Nothing to waste your time, only a step-by-step layout of what happens when a person or people manufacture clothing for retail purposes. From the design concepts (who and how they're created) to what type of people you would need (including full job descriptions) to what the considerations are for contracting, shipping etc.. There are also tons of other little things including pictures that are laid out in a very intelligible way. The beauty of her writing is that the data is always concious that you may not be a huge entreprenuer, and applies methods for the little guy as well. Just an amazing book. How to read a potato in a painting as a potato and not a solar symbol?
This book is about writing on art.It has sections to equip you with what to keep in mind while writing an essay, research paper or review of an exhibit.
Useful in some ways, not in others.
I recently read the 6th edition of this book in hopes that it would help me to improve my ability to understand and write about art. I found that the book is a direct, well-written primer for someone finishing high school or beginning their undergraduate degree, but for someone with a bit more experience, it turns out to be a mixed bag. points out the obvious
A professor highly recommended this book to my art history class. Iwas disappointed in it. I had hoped it would offer some useful advice but instead it merely outlines the things anyone writing on a college level (and the book seems to be aimed at college students) should already know. Must have,
This book is unparalleled in its information about precious metals. I would almost trade all my other metal books for this one alone. Well worth the cost and indispensable to a Goldsmith. If you want to work in metal, from iron to platinum, you need this book. Very technical but the information is invaluable and can be applied to any metal medium. My copy has some duplicate pages in the 50-60 range, but nothing was left out. That is my only complaint and I am sure it was just a binding error that may be in only my book as none of the others I have seen do.

great book
The depth and amount of information in this book is staggering. The translation is great it doesn't seem stilted as a lot of translations do. It was edited by Tim Mcreigth of "the complete metalsmith" fame and was translated and published by his company. It gives way more information on the reason of why and how techniques work than any other book I have seen. In some ways it is the prefect companion to "the complete metal smith" it has a lot of the same information as it and a lot more depth. My only caveat is it can be a little dry and some times overly technical. but still it is a great work.

This is the best theoretical book in jewelry
The Brepohl's book surely is the best book about the theory of the jewelry's affair's that I know, but isn't a project book. Is a textbook well written, with a very good english translation (the original is in german).The theory of metalurgy, that is lacking in the others books on the field, is update and well presented.In the end of some chapters there are few examples of student work, but their level is very high, and isn't showed all details of how to get it. I agree with "A reader": This book is sublime.
This should be considered indispensable to anyone interested in this artist, Romanticism, or landscape painting in general. As well as offering a carefully considered account of the artist's life and work, the text is careful to separate the myths that have grown around some of these paintings, carefully placing the artist within the context of his own time andcovering the manner in which these images have been misappropriated up to the present day.

500 Cups: Ceramic Explorations of Utility and Grace
It is a good reference book for the ceramic artist andcollector.It provides wonderful pictures, inspiration, and ideas.

A formidable tour of the art of ceramic cup-making
Anyone who thinks there is very little difference between one cup and another would have that notion blown away by simply flipping open any page of this book.When the teacher of a local community college pottery course saw this book, she asked everyone in her classes to refer to it before beginning to design their next cup projects.It opened their minds to some of the infinite possibilities available to practitioners of the potter's craft.

This work contributes to graphic design education
I am particularly impressed with the strength of the sections and introductory texts for each section. It is very cleverly planned and well written. Freedom to draw
After reading Everyday matters you must own this book.It's liberating to realize that at 48 I have given my self permission to draw.The way that he instructs each "lesson" is ingenuis.This book is well written and illistrated (dahhh). Take the time to feel this free in your drawing creativeity. He guides you in a new way of thinking.
Draws You In
This book motivated me to start keeping a journal and drawing more. I'd been journaling for years but stopped soon after I read "SCRAPS: Adventures in Scrapbooking" (very funny essays but the book promotes journal slacking) then I picked up Danny Gregory's and I'm glad he shared his take on really noticing what's all around us in life in this book. Ten Stars.....this is the Bible!
If you can only buy one book on composition of Outdoor Painting, this is the one.The original book, published in 1941, has seen several editions and goes in and out of print. Although Amazon often shows that it is out of print, call the publisher directly.They have plenty of brand new copies in the latest editions.The book, itself, is not large, only 6x9 or so. And it mostly consists of WORDS!But it is one of the most succinct books on composition I have ever read. Each paragraph, each sentence is packed with information and advice.There are some simple line drawings which help the viewer and provide the basics for compositional outlines. Also, the newer editions have some very fine color samples of Mr. Paynes work in the back of the book, as well as several addenda by his daughter. If you are an outdoor painter, you could read this book every day for the rest of your life and still find something new to think about or try. ... Read more
