4-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This is a big and heavy book.
5-0 out of 5 stars all substance, no fluff
i found an open copy of this at the book store last night so i got to look at it for the first time. short of a small intro by avedon at the front, this book is ALL pictures. i believe it was 283 photos, mostly full page shots or each taking up the full spread. no captions. no text. no stories. just photos. the back has a great index with farily large thumbnails of all the photos along with caption info. this book is worth $100 (especially if they are selling "ansel adams at 100" for $100) and it's totally worth it. the spine is bound rather loosely, but that's so the pages lay flat from cover to cover. if you are an avedon fan, or just a fan of photography, this is one you don't want to miss.

4-0 out of 5 stars Richard Avedon, we hardly knew ye.
Of course Richard Avedon is one of the most important photographers in this century. This is his retrospective book and it's very good. If you like Richard Avedon, this is an important book to own. If you are sittingon the fence about him, borrow your friends copy and, call it a day. AnAutobiography is a great introduction to Avedon. However, for five bills, don't go gently into that dark night. This is a collector's copy and theprice reflects that. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye of the Independent
She called herself one of the Independents. The world remembers her as the Impressionist who painted "The Boating Party," the choice for a first-class U.S. postage stamp and one of the most widely reproduced paintings. She was behind America's first purchase of Impressionist art:a Degas painting. In fact, friend and mentor Edgar Degas advised her on the farther window light and floor for "Little Girl in an Armchair" and praised "Girl Arranging her Hair," the Japanese woodblock print inspired "Bath," and "Mother and Boy."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Animal Abuse and Art
This book comes from someone with an animal rights background and a background in the arts as well. The images are so well done, perfectly disturbing and the stories, truthful and profound. A great read for anyone that wants to know the truth behind the industry.

2-0 out of 5 stars Polemic by artist with seriously warped view of life
I purchased this book because I like deviant art, but this one goes beyond deviant..it's just crazed and illogical.I'd like to state for the record that I have personally killed and helped gut hundreds of chickens. When you are hungry and dealing with the processing of a winter food supply, sentimentality is a luxury you can ill afford.I did not believe then nor do I believe now that chicken killers are "Nazis" perpetuating a holocaust.Sue Coe exaggerates the grim reality of farm animal slaughter, taking it to grotesque extremes.By attributing human-like emotions to the animals, she tries to get her audience to identify with the victims and respond with pity. Her portrayal is more melodramatic than accurate. In fact Sue Coe, like many animal activists, exhibits an almost unhealthy obsession with pain, death, blood, and torture. The animal rights purity trip allows these gothic animal rights types to guiltlessly wallow in their perversions in the name of a "good" cause.I don't have any problems with kinky art per se but Sue Coe just goes over the top with her sanctimonious go-veg shock tactics. While some of the drawings are strictly representational most of them seem self-indulgent and just plain nuts at times. It's actually a valuable book for the non-believer trying tounderstand the animal rights mentality, that's why I am giving it two stars. Perhaps Sue Coe reveals more of that mentality than she really intended. If I was a parent who found this book in a pre teen's room, I'd be seriously concerned.Sue Coe is definitely not for everyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tough call between the Scribner and the Wittkower
I have the two main American books on Bernini; the Scribner and the Wittkower, plus the Scala edition by Maurizio Fagiolo from their "Great Masters of Art" series. Each book has something to commend it.Scribner's prose is by far the most passionate, easiest to read, and most informative forthe general reader. The Wittkower is a bit dry and academic while the English translation of the Fagiolo is poorly done and shorter on material than either of the other two (understandable, since it's a shorter book).3-0 out of 5 stars Tough call between the Scribner and the Wittkower

This is a great book that helps you appreciate the beauty that is Rome.My husband I lived in Italy for a year and frequently took our guests to Rome.We would inevitably come across Bernini's fountains and sculptures in our touring of the city. The information contained in this book helped make our role of tour guide more interesting.Bernini and his students changed the appearance of Rome with their beautifully sculpted fountains throughout the city and beautiful statues in St. Peter's Basicila. If you have any interest in appreciating great sculpture, or simply wonder about the story behind some of the great fountains throughout Rome, then this is the book to buy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Analysis of the Influences on the Art of Francis Bacon
Fortunate were the ones who were privileged to see the exhibition FRANCIS BACON AND THE TRADITION OF ART in Vienna at the Kunsthistorisches Museum or at the Foundation Beyeler in Basel in 2003 and 2004.What an experience that must have been.Curator Barbara Steffen assembled on of the most comprehensive surveys of the works of Bacon and presented them in context with the ideas and works of art that influenced Bacon's genius. In Steffen's words 'This exhibit is the first opportunity to examine his works side by side with the artists who inspired him, and in this way to cast at least some light on how he conceived and devised his paintings'.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding biography
Rarely do I start rereading a book immediately after I finish the last page, and it is even more rare for the book to be a biography. Mary Street Alinder's biography of Ansel Adams is one of these.3-0 out of 5 stars A nice book...I just discovered I don't care much for Adams!
The book is interesting and quite well written, if you don't mind the non-chronology of it.I just came away thinking even less of Mr. Adams than I did going in and that was a let-down for me.I think some of his photographs are very pretty, but I would never call them art! They don't "move" me and neither did this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thoroughly Investigated Aspect of the Genius of Francis Bacon
It seems the number of books about British artist Francis Bacon, both biography and art monograph, grows each year, an indication of just how important this innovative and strange painter is in the spectrum of art history.IN CAMERA FRANCIS BACON: PHOTOGRAPHY, FILM AND THE PRACTIVE OF PAINTING is an erudite and fascinating work that opens previously sealed windows into the dark life and immensely controversial creativity of this daring genius.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating exploration of photography and painting
"In Camera" is one of the most interesting books on Francis Bacon, one of the greatest painters of the 20th century, ever published for several reasons: First, it takes good advantage of the meanwhile fairly large array of books, catalogs and articles which have been published on Bacon. Second, Harrison had access to materials, mainly photographs that have not been published before. Third, he was able to interview several persons close to Bacon, notably John Edwards, Bacon's last companion. Fourth, and most importantly, the book has a clear thesis that the author is able to present convincingly. It is Harrison's position that Bacon used mainly photographs either taken by photographers by his request or from books and magazines to the effect that they: "triggered decisive turning points in his stylistic development" (from book jacket).

4-0 out of 5 stars Come Visit Beautiful French Landscapes
The book Impressions of Light by George Shackleford et al is a companion book to an art exhibit of works from Boston's Museum of Fine Art. The paintings are landscapes created by France's greatest nineteenth century painters and photographers. Most of the painters are Impressionists but others schools are represented as well. The book also contains sketches which were part of the exhibit. The sketches, as well as the written commentary which accompanies many of them, allows the reader to better understand the creative process of the painters. The factual information in the book is very extensive and helps the readers see more in the works than normally meets the eye. Perhaps what is most interesting about this book and the collection of paintings and photographs included it is the plethora of lesser known works by these great artists. Readers, especially those who have been fortunate to view the exhibit, will be transported to the settings of these great works and gain a deeper appreciation of these great artists and photographers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A spectaculrly beautifully, illustrated art history
Impressions Of Light: The French Landscape From Corot To Monet is a lavishly, richly, spectaculrly beautifully, illustrated art history showcasing one hundred years of French art and 56 French artists. Included area wealth of rare and unusual monotypes by Degas, three states of a softground etching by Pissarro, and numerous illustrative works by lesser-known by equally significant contemporaries. Of particular interest is the attention paid to intersecting developments in French art from the Barbizon school through post-Impressionism. Enhanced with more than 80 paintings and 70 works on paper drawn from the MFA collections, showcasing the French landscape through painting, prints, and photography, Impressions Of Light deftly explores individual artists' perceptions as well as the manifold ways that influenced each other. Impressions Of Light will prove to be a welcome and much appreciated contribution to Art History collections in general, and 19th Century French landscape art and photography in particular. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Concise Compilation
Harry Callahan was the most influential and important figure in photography throughout the last half of the 20th century. This edition of his work shows chronologically how Callahan's approach to the mediumevolved and changed, while his vision remained ever faithful to modernity. The book begins in Detroit, where Callahan worked for Chrysler whilepursuing photography as a serious hobby. It was also during this time thathe married Eleanor Knapp, who would later become the subjectfor many ofhis strongest images. The accompanying essay by Sarah Greenough issuccinctly written, blending biographical information to the photographsCallahan took throughout his long, photographic journey (Callahan died in1999).Callahan's outlook on photography changed dramatically after havingmet Ansel Adams, at a photography workshop in Detroit.Taking some ofAdams' philosophy and refining it, Callahan created his own style ofphotographing/printing, made apparent by such images as `Weeds in Snow' and`Detroit, 1942'.In these images and throughout the rest of his life,Callahan easily turned the simplest subject matter into monumental works ofphotographic art.The book provides powerful examples of this, in bothblack & white and color. After leaving his job to pursuephotographyfull time, Callahan moved to Chicago and taught at the Institute of Design. Continuing the experimentation he began in Detroit, Callahan worked andrefined his style during his Chicago years, utilizing double exposure, collage, close-ups, and the use of positive and negative space. The bookthen turns to Callahan's New England period. It was during this time thatCallahan taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, in Providence.Thebook captures this period vividly, with images of varying contrast andmood. Here we see Callahan's ability at adapting to his environment byproducing increasingly poetic images of nature, as well as urban andsuburban street scenes. In his later work from 1972-1992, the photographsin "Harry Callahan" document the photographer's travels in other countries, with an increased attention on color. It remains clear by the images shownin his later years, that Callahan continued to explore photography byconstantly challenging himself and the medium.Where most photographersare known for one particular style or body of work (Cartier-Bresson's`decisive moment' or Robert Frank's publication of The Americans), Callahanis known for many different styles and bodies of work. The photographs in "Harry Callahan" prove this with each turn of the page.Callahan was aphotographic artist in the truest sense, if we choose to believe anartists' goal is not only to create but to constantly evolve.Callahanwas, continues to be, and always will be an influence to thosephotographers who seek not only perfection in the creation of theirphotographic art, but also change. ... The story he tells is so rich in detail and so fascinating in bringing the genius of these two artists to life, that I felt as though I knew them just as well. This book pulled me into the world of 16th century Italy on page one and left me wanting to book a flight to Rome to see where this riveting story unfolded. I am rarely enchanted by books of art history, but this book bears that genius. Buy this book and treat yourself to wonderful experience. Then buy Mr. Morrissey's mystery novel "A Weekend in Blenheim" and treat yourself again. ... Read more
