2-0 out of 5 stars get ARhT instead
I don't know why, but this volume of Giger's paintings presents them in a really shoddy appearance. The book itself is patterned a lot like a smaller book of his called "ARhT". If you compare the paintings that appeare in both of these books, you'll find that the retrospective pictures look less colorful and lacking in detail (some are actually just black and white photos) maybe it has something to do with it being an older publication. I dunno. Get ARhT instead. the paintings look better and Giger tells some really cool stories and maxims on life.

1-0 out of 5 stars For art fans, not horror fans and "Alien" fans
I didn't like this book at all.I expected paintings of aliens and supernatural creatures.Instead I got art that's nonsense, from my point of view. The paintings look nice, but they're meaningless to me.I think that Giger needs better ideas for the subject matter of his paintings. Also, Giger's obsession with sex seems juvenile to me. 5-0 out of 5 stars Giger on a budget

4-0 out of 5 stars For the dachsdhund lover!
How lovely! An art book about dachshunds! Of course, they are mainly sleeping, dachshunds are too energetic to be captured with a camera, let alone a paintbrush. But the sketches add to the paintings and one can easily recognize the true nature of these dogs: philosophic, intelligent and full of natural authority. Although my favourite picture was a photograph of Hockney and his dogs and the pillow (in most paintings) with Hockney's paintings all around them. The book tells more about us dachshund lovers than the dogs, we are a strange bunch with an odd sense of humour and a deep passion for these dogs. Well, only a person with an odd sense of humour and a lot of patience would love - and manage to live with - a dachshund...3-0 out of 5 stars don't buy this book unless you really love dachs
David Hockney is a great artist and it's touching that he made a whole book about the little dogs that are his friends. But since the whole book is really just two dogs in different poses, don't purchase it unless you're a true dachshund lover. I bought this book as a gift for my relatives who own dachs, and they oohed and ahhed over it.

Editorial Review

Do you believe in fairies? If so, this book will delight you. "It wasn't produced for someone who isn't a believer in things magical," observes photographer Anne Geddes, who clearly is. What is also abundantly clear is that she appreciates the charm of babies and small children, and the role that fantasy plays in their young lives. Her tiny models become fairies, gnomes, sunflowers, water lilies, field mice, ladybugs, and peas in a pod in this amusing and endearing volume. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Children like this book
When I first looked at the book I thought it was too cute and too sacchrine but i've noticed that preschool aged children really enjoy looking at the babies dressed up in costumes. My son is nuts about this book and has read it dozens of times.

This was an absolutely incredible deal. The book was in perfect condition and originally very expensive. It was more than 80% off and the shipping was prompt and well packaged. Thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ
I just finished reading this book and really enjoyed it.I've really laerned a lot about what life was like behind the scenes of the films I grew up with, such as Our Gang and Laurel & Hardy.I highly recoomend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The business side of laughter
During the 1910s, Hal Roach started a little comedy studio.By the late 1920s, he had eclipsed rival Mack Sennett both artistically and financially. His studio built Harold Lloyd and Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy into major comedy stars. And lots of lesser comedians like Snub Pollard, Charley Chase, Our Gang, Will Rogers, and Thelma Todd made funny films there too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Artist
I was totally amazed at the extra-ordinary talent of Thomas Gainsborough. He is truly one of the all-time great artist. I appreciated the fact that his paintings were shown in color. This book also gave a thorough description of his life. I am happy I purchased this book!
5-0 out of 5 stars To remember past emotions...
This catalogue contains beautiful reproductions of all the drawings and paintings from the last great Gainsborough's exhibition. It helps to remember the emotions I've felt in front of the true works. Every notice is sensitive and informative. And all texts are from eminent specialists. I just regret that bibliography doesn't refer to the old great Paris exhibition. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars READABLE, OPINIONATED, NEVER DULL
The author attempts interesting 'symbolic' interpretations of some of Holbeins' more famous works in the visual context of the time. For example, Anna of Cleves' asymmetrical dress trim says "No social graces", to the initiated. One wonders why the King didn't see this if it was indeed common to include visual puns in paintings? I took issue with the author's rather silly descriptions of 16th century religious books as 'best-sellers', as if there was some sort of survey going on at the time. Otherwise, this is a very worthwhile addition to any Holbein fan's collection. It's written intelligently and attempts to place the artist in the various towns and countries with reason. And it will make you look twice at ALL the details in all the versions of a Holbein painting! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking Winslow Homer Seriously
Too often museums and writers take the prodigious output of the 19th century American artist Winslow Homer lightly, even at times dismissing him as inconsequential in the mainstream of important art. This magnificent volume whould change that once and for all.
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice taste of Winslow Homer
I'd been looking for a book about Winslow Homer for a while and was delighted to find this one. Kate Jennings' copy about his life and art are very good and the 68 color prints are large and on glossy paper. The prints are not top notch, but very nice. If you're looking for a nice collection of Homer's work without breaking the bank, this is for you. (This review pertains to the Winslow Homer book by Kate Jennings. Alas,I havn't seen the one by Nicolai Cikovsky.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Winslow Homer, A 'GEM'for the Serious Art Student
As an Art student, venturing into watercolor recently, I received this book as a gift. I truly gained much information about the artist and the additon of color plates (90+) make this a complete reference guide. The author has separatedhis works into catogories by subject matter. The intro- duction reviews his travels, family life,interests,educa-tion,recognition and awardsduring his lifetime. A brief review proceeds each Chapterwhich then is visually supp-orted by wonderflul, colorful plates of Winslow works of that subject. The Chapters are Civil War, Sea PaintingsTropics, Adirondonck and Canada, and Prout's Neck,Me.He was an extraordinarypainter of various mediums, and always captured the 'atmosphere' in his workswhether it was stormy seasoff the coast of Maine, placid lakes in the mountains, clear skies in the tropics or children at play at that time. Fortunately, he was an artist who was noticed during his lifetime and rewarded with fame before his demise at age 74, having enjoyed his love of his work. I would highly recommend this hard cover version, to any art lover or student of the arts. I will plan to purchase this publication for my son, and perhaps a friend in the near future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A readable, sensitive and comprehensive treatment of Hodgkin
The very dust-jacket with its dynamic detail from Hodgkin's Old Sky strikes the right note in this intelligently presented and visually seductive review of the painter's career. The excellent quality of the illustrations, their logical placing directly opposite the pertinent text, marginal page references, the choice of type-face and the luxury-feel paper all make the mere handling of the book a real pleasure. 5-0 out of 5 stars A passionate and scholarly study of Hodgkin.
Andrew Graham-Dixon's passionate book about the work of Howard Hodgkin, has the detail and insight serious students of this important artist want. This book is as the first monograph to be published on this artist,a very important purchase. If like me you thirst for really good reproduction, the colour plates are large and do justice to the paintings. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars worthwhile glimpses of a difficult genius
Musa Mayer (Guston's daughter) has undertaken a brave and cathartic task in writing a biography of her father, a self-obsessed painter. Philip Guston could well be regarded as the last artist of an era inasmuch as Gustav Mahler could be regarded as the last composer of classical symphonies. With Guston one comes to the end of painting. What started with Cezanne ends here.
4-0 out of 5 stars Unique Guston Biography
Night Studio is an excellent read about one of the more fascinating and well thought out artist's in american history, Philip Guston. From the very personal standpoint only one year after Guston's premature death at the age of 66, Meyer shows both a historical and emotional view of her father.
