4-0 out of 5 stars Review of "Dear Friend"
This well-written and well-researched book is important for anyone interested in painting at the turn of the century, in the position of woman artists at that time, or in Paula Modersohn-Becker herself. It also offers insights into the life and psyche of the famous poet Rainer Maira Rilke.Modersohn-Becker suffers from being known primarily though "Requiem for a Friend," a poem written about her by Rilke, whose view is colored by his own needs and beliefs.Torgersen shows that far from only having made a good beginning, as Rilke claimed, Modersohn-Becker had developed a style of her own and had created a number of arresting and original paintings.Rilke also claimed that in attempting to reconcile marriage and a career in art, Modersohn-Becker had chosen wrongly.Torgersen traces Modersohn-Becker's handling of her husband's attempt to assert authority over her, and shows that she had convinced him to allow space for her art in their marriage. This, too, was a remarkable achievement for her time.Art historians and feminists ought to read this book.

Editorial Review

Let this handsome volume introduce you to the great French painter Henri Matisse through a brief but informative biography and more than 80 full-color reproductions. Included are works from more than five decades in various styles- -early still lifes, Mediterranean allegories, vivid dance images, and the collages that so clearly say "Matisse." One of his last, most ambitious endeavors is a stained glass for a chapel at Vence in the south of France--one of the most acclaimed ensembles of church decoration of the 20th century. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Master of Photography, a Mistress of Weston
This very handsomely printed volume by Aperture of Tina Modotti presents an eclectic collection of her photographs, mostly taken in the mid-to-late 1920s in Mexico. Italian-born, Modotti emigrated to the United States, and then to Mexico, during which time she had an extended affair with famed photographer Edward Weston, for whom Modotti also modeled for his nude studies. Partially through Weston's influence, model and actress Tina turned her talents to photography, and the world has been better for it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just good ... but Great!
Tina Modotti was not only a good photographer, she was a GREAT one! I don't think we would even know who she was today if it wasn't for her wonderful photographs. I loved this little book and it's a perfectcompanion to Margaret Hooks' excellent biography: Tina Modotti,Photographer and revolutionary. All Tina fans should have this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful photographer, Fascinating life
I really enjoyed this lovely book of Tina Modotti's photographs. I thought the selection was quite unigue, not the usual ones I've seen reproduced in other books. In fact several of the photos I'd never seen before. Also theessay helped me put her work in context by showing how she developed as aphotographer. To my mind she certainly was a master of photography, as wellas a fascinating woman. A good book, at a great price! ... Read more

This book is only average, at least as far as reproduction of the artist's paintings is concerned.Too many of the paintings are reproduced in black & white, and those in color do not look quite right--the colors (and depth of color) aren't as beautiful as they appear in some other books. If you are looking only for a general sense of Manet's work, this book might be fine for you, but you will not be getting the full sense of his works' beauty. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Come Visit Beautiful French Landscapes
The book Impressions of Light by George Shackleford et al is a companion book to an art exhibit of works from Boston's Museum of Fine Art. The paintings are landscapes created by France's greatest nineteenth century painters and photographers. Most of the painters are Impressionists but others schools are represented as well. The book also contains sketches which were part of the exhibit. The sketches, as well as the written commentary which accompanies many of them, allows the reader to better understand the creative process of the painters. The factual information in the book is very extensive and helps the readers see more in the works than normally meets the eye. Perhaps what is most interesting about this book and the collection of paintings and photographs included it is the plethora of lesser known works by these great artists. Readers, especially those who have been fortunate to view the exhibit, will be transported to the settings of these great works and gain a deeper appreciation of these great artists and photographers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A spectaculrly beautifully, illustrated art history
Impressions Of Light: The French Landscape From Corot To Monet is a lavishly, richly, spectaculrly beautifully, illustrated art history showcasing one hundred years of French art and 56 French artists. Included area wealth of rare and unusual monotypes by Degas, three states of a softground etching by Pissarro, and numerous illustrative works by lesser-known by equally significant contemporaries. Of particular interest is the attention paid to intersecting developments in French art from the Barbizon school through post-Impressionism. Enhanced with more than 80 paintings and 70 works on paper drawn from the MFA collections, showcasing the French landscape through painting, prints, and photography, Impressions Of Light deftly explores individual artists' perceptions as well as the manifold ways that influenced each other. Impressions Of Light will prove to be a welcome and much appreciated contribution to Art History collections in general, and 19th Century French landscape art and photography in particular. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A compilation of learned essays on the work of the great artist after age-related illness
Compiled and co-edited by art historians Oliver Berggruen and Max Hollein, Henri Matisse: Drawing With Scissors, Masterpieces From The Late Years is a compilation of learned essays on the work of the great artist after age-related illness, which confining him either to his bed or a wheel chair, would no longer permit him to paint, so Mattise took up cutting out colored paper patterns and having his assistants mount them in special patterns under his guidance (often from his wheel chair). The profusely illustrated essays include "Jazz: Rhythm and Meaning (Margret Stuffmann); "Painting with Scissors: Jazz and Verve" (Michael Anthonioz); "Drafts for Publications and Maquettes" (Ingrid Pfeiffer); "Decoration beyond Decoration" (Remi Labrusse); "Resonance and Depth in Matisse's Paper Cut-Outs" (Olivier Berggruen); "The Windows in the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence" (Ingrid Pfeiffer); "Philodenros" (Hannes Bohringer); and "Painting alone remains full of adventure - Matisse's Cut-Outs as an Inspiration for Nicolas de Stael, Ellsworth Kelly and Andy Warhol" (Gunda Luyken). A superb guide, Henri Matisse is very strongly recommended addition to personal and academic library Art History reference collections is enhanced with the inclusion of an informative foreword by Max Hollein and Olivier Berggruen, an extensive biography of Mattise, a list of illustrated works, and a selected bibliography for further study.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book Worthy of Its Subject
Originally published in an expensive hardcover edition as a catalogue to a European exhibition of the same name, Prestel has wisely chosen to republish this important book in a smaller, softbound and attractively priced format. This is an unexpected boon to lovers of Henri Matisse's art, as "Drawing With Scissors" is the most important publication on Matisse's famous last works - the paper cut-outs or gouaches decoupees - to appear in many years, and effectively supercedes John Elderfield's "The Cut-Outs of Henri Matisse" as the best introduction to these famous works. The authors are a noted group of European art historians, and each of the essays here explore different aspects of the making, meaning, and interpretation of these unique objects, from the cut-outs as Matisse's final attempt to unite color and drawing to the cut-outs as revolutionary works which explode the traditional opposition between "high art" and "decoration" in Western history.Although visually simple to the extreme and coloristically exuberant, these last works were the product of many years of searching and investigation into the nature of reality and the creative process, and the authors do justice to the unexpected intellectual heft behind the gorgeous appearance of the cut-outs.Physically, this small book is gorgeous - the layout and design equal the hardcover edition and the quality of the color reproductions is stunning.A must-have for any serious art library. ...
