"Gee..." as Andy would say. "It's so big..." Brilliant compilation of Warholia with analysis and photos as evidence of His Genius. Two chapters- "America the Beautiful" and "Matinee Idols"- written by David Dalton who was there at the Creation are especially perceptive and insightful. Andy Warhol lives- Bigger and Better Forever!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite simply, brilliant...
The life of the scheming fraudster is by its very nature more interesting than that of the natural genius. Everyone loves an underdog, and Han van Meegeren was that most unusual of underdogs: a winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Of course it's brilliant, and it's b.s., which is why it's brilliant...
Seriously, at a certain point when I was around 18 or 19, this was my Bible, or my Little Red Book - I and a handful of friends (Warhol died at about the same time) took every syllable here very, very seriously.
4-0 out of 5 stars At worst, amusing and entertaining. At best, brilliant.
When viewing a piece of famous art, a person might ask themselves, "what exactly was the artist thinking?" or they might wonder what the artist was like to be able to produce the work that they do.In the case of Andy Warhol, the biggest art star of the last 100 years, these questions are answered in his autobiographical work, "The Philosophy of Andy Warhol : (From A to B and Back Again)".
    3-0 out of 5 stars Warhol....WHO?????
This is an excellent book to read if you want to take a look into the life and mind of the man himself, Andy Warhol. It is an entertaining book that will get you through the boring days at home or the long bus rides, yet it is not a repeat reader. The clever relevancy of the stories directly relating to the chapter titles makes you want to read further to see what exactly he is talking about. The book contains some material that seems completely irrelevant and dim-witted, making me wonder why I am reading it. Warhol has his moments though, creating a few laughs here and there, but nothing that would make the book justifiably great.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beauty Of Wyeth's Recent Work
Andrew Wyeth is an American master and his works shine with not only an inner light, but an inner glory. Several dozen of his (mostly recent) paintings are to be found in this collection, along with notes, comments, and background histories. A truly great collection by an artist whose talents speak of genius.

This is a wonderful book on America's greatest living painter.I have alway loved Andrew Wyeth's art, it so singular to him, totally unique. You can tell he was influenced by Whistler, but his work is his own. This book has vivid images of Wyeth's best work and the text is highly informative.I was thrilled when I saw this book, it is the best I have seen on Wyeth's vast catalog of paintings.Wyeth is truly an American Master, thank you Ms. Knutson for a job well done. ... Editorial Review

Though he is chiefly viewed as a monumental pop-art icon, Andy Warhol was truly a man of many talents. But his component parts don't necessarily match up. He made paintings, prints, sculptures, installations, performances; he produced one of the greatest rock bands of all time, the Velvet Underground; he directed films and wrote a novel as well as a philosophical text. But over and above this massive pile of work is a man who was unpredictable, enigmatic, and impenetrable: ultimately, he would have others think, almost inhuman.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Imagery + Surrealism = Pop Realism
After reading this book, I reckon that Andy Warhol was a man of unpredictable genius. Imbedded in his images is the poetic appeal and the simultaneous pop and avante-garde timelessness of his art. He made theserious and the comic blend well. He balanced the beau monde and theclassless. His colour choices evoked and exposed the hidden images withinhis works, and they simply slither in mind once you stare at them. Unlikesome new generation artists or wannabees who only splash their canvasseswith colours, sometimes of uncompromising combinations, every artwork ofWarhol is alive, moving and his concept comprehensive. Here is a pop artistwho is wildly prolific! As a freelance writer and editor doing articles ondesign and who works within the pop culture, I'd say his works are morethan simply decoratives. They speak with you and are nothing less thanenthralling. I feel terrific owning a copy! This is a treasureable read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes, easy steps, wonderful results.
This book puts you on the fast track to grafting the styles of famous artists into your own work through more than five dozen easy-to-follow recipes. Not surprisingly, you'll find yourself learning more than you originally expected to about Photoshop.

    2-0 out of 5 stars not-so-fast ...
Earlier this year I reviewed what many will see as the companion volume to this book ("Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers"), written by the same author. Unfortunately, the newer publication is less useful. It seems to have been written on a pretext that it's clever to be able to duplicate what traditional artists can do. This seems - from my own personal viewpoint - to be greatly undervaluing the power of Photoshop (and similar software). Practitioners of digital fine art should (really, constructively) be looking to explore what the principles of prior and traditional art can mean within a new domain.

Very well written. Answers important questions artists like myself have about reed and quill pens, inks, etc. that Vincent used. If you enjoy working in pen and ink this book provides lots of exciting details. Such as Vincent's method of drawing in pencil and heightening in pen and ink and his common sense method of making the paintings proportional to his drawing paper dimensions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Directed at the expert, fine for the fan, too!
I would like to add to the reviews below that this book is a pleasure to hold and to view because it is so well made.If there is any 'art' book that should be made for posterity it is the catalog raisonne of an artist. In this instance, the publisher has done the artist's audience a real service for, the book is beautifully printed and bound in Italy by Amilcare Pizzi; Italy seeming to have usurped Switzerland's place as the world's premier art book printer. The pages are thick and glossy and the reproduction is top notch.5-0 out of 5 stars Andy Warhol Prints
This 3rd edition of Andy Warhol Prints gives much information to someone who is interested in the various published and unpublished works which Warhol created. In addition to providing color photographs of the prints, the book gives details about the edition size and characteristics of each individual portfolio. This book will be quite useful for the Warhol fan, art students, as well as collectors of Warhol's work. It is the most definitive book of his prints available.

5-0 out of 5 stars a brillant contemporary artist
Bill Viola is one of the most interesting artists working today. His workbrilliantly blends technology and spirituality and this collection of hiswritings provides a glimpse into his thought process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant artist and thinker
It is so refreshing to read what an artist's work is about from their own point of view, and not from a critic's. This book takes that a step further, by including sketches, a plethora of quotes, and facsimiles ofViola's legendary notebooks. Unlike most new media/video artists, Violauses technology only to get beyond it, to provoke his audience to ponderthe larger questions in life. He is an extraordinary thinker as well as apioneering video artist. As an artist I find his writings -- and proof thathe's an ordinary human being, with a messy notebook -- incrediblyinspirational. The ideas in this book will keep you going for years. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This lavish but manageable book is the catalog for one of the most successful van Gogh exhibitions ever (at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., through January 3, 1999, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from January 17, 1999, to April 4, 1999). Judging from the haunting, beautifully reproduced paintings and drawings in the book--which range from the iconic to the rarely seen--it is easy to see why hordes of people keep pressing through overcrowded galleries to get a glimpse of the originals. The ones here are all from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, where most of Vincent's work resides. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the most original artist of his time
Vincent van Gogh is the artist who I feel I relate to most on a personal level. His demons are my demons. His yearning to some day find "the right girl" is my yearning. His spiritual faith in God is my spiritual faith. His weaknesses are my weaknesses. His strengths are my strengths. I'm very fond of van Gogh. He made many mistakes, including getting involved in a doomed love affair with a prostitute, or how he cut off his earlobe in a fit of anguish. Well, okay, I identify with him but that's something I've never been tempted to do haha. Vincent was a troubled and tormented and deeply under-appreciated artist in his day, only managing to sell one or two paintings in his life. Now he is among the very most popular. His works sell for many millions, even minor works. 5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT JOURNEY WITH VAN GOGH
One of the best pieces that I ever read explaining paintings along the different periods which were passed by Van Gogh. Also, it gives a complete ride through his life and personality.

I can tell that this was a really interesting book. After reading it, I now have a new outlook on his work, as I finally understand it thanks to this book, as well as complete respect for Edward. An amazing individual Edward Weston was with a fascinating life, with all who he encountered.A must read if you are an artist, photographer or not!

Second time reading Weston's Day Books over thirty years.First time I was young and only looking for technical hints. This time I'm much more interested in relationships, family, and Weston's struggle with his art, money and lifeA must read for all artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Weston experience- an introspective look
A fascinating introspective look into the mind of one of the great American photographers of the beginning of the 20th century, Edward Weston. With his intricate, yet simple, and sometimes abstract images, Weston created a world of his own together with his "one true love," his camera. By evidently pouring his soul into every entry of his daybooks, Weston makes the reader gain a greater understanding of his technique and extraordinary eye for beauty. The chronological organization of entries takes the reader from Weston's days in Mexico through his days in California.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Wyeth Book
Yes, this IS one of the great Andrew Wyeth books.Everyone interested in this great American artist will love it.This was my first Wyeth book.It was on my shelf for a long time, and I knew I liked his work. After my retirement in 2001, I began painting with watercolors and looked around for some work I liked for inspiration and found only Winslow Homer and Andrew Wyeth.Later, I was fortunate to see the Helga show in Omaha and found out how amazing Wyeth really is.I spent hours looking at these paintings trying to figure out how he was able to balance areas of color that looked almost poured on next to areas of almost photographic detail.I have read that that's what they call drybrush technique.Well, maybe so, but I call it sheer genius. As with all Wyeth reproductions in books, this one is good, but after you have seen the actual paintings, they are but pale shadows.Nevertheless, I love this book.It is the next best thing to being near a museum where you can see the originals.Wyeth is indeed an inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars He must have been in love
I don't mean that Helga was his lover. Still, the artist has an intense experience of his model, and Helga was his model for 15 years.

    Editorial Review

This thorough collection of van Gogh's letters has been assembled with an artful eye and sensitivity to the artist's thinking. The result is an atypical take on Vincent van Gogh that avoids putting too much stress on his troubled mental state and too much straining by the editor to shape a narrative out of van Gogh's epistolary clues. Instead, we see the thoughtful and contemplative side of this creative genius, as well as his concern for the impact his art and life had on those people closest to him. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest letters ever written by an artist
Van Gogh is a tremendously powerful letter- writer. In these letters mostly written to his brother we see a great , suffering , soul, a devoted artist tormented and striving. This may all sound like 'cliche' but Van Gogh is perhaps the most conspicuous example of the cliche of the suffering , rejected in- his- life artist who knows great recognition only after death.
4-0 out of 5 stars "the best way to love God is to love many things"
A very fine collection of the letters, with multiple sides of VVG revealed. To read a collection of letters by an artist whose work you know very well is to invite yourself to take a look at him as a person. As a person, I found that I liked him best in these letters when he was struggling with his religion, his art, and his purpose. I'm glad that Roskill didn't make a selection that focused solely on the more famous and theatrical depressions.5-0 out of 5 stars An Intimate Look
I bought this book several years ago in a college bookstore. How fortunate these students were to have been able to read and discuss this with others! I have had a long interest in Van Gogh and found this book to be fascinating, an almost voyeuristic look into his short life. I am glad to see that it is available * *and would hope that people now seeing the traveling Van Gogh portraiture exhibit might read it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best
My teacher introduced me to Andrew Wyeth's paintings and drawings about a year or two ago. I've been in love with his work ever since. It's just how beautiful his linework is and how he brings life to the paintings. That is so incredibly rare. There are plenty of portrait artists out there, but I can't think of one that impresses me as much as he does. I think this is because of how well he knew his subjects.
5-0 out of 5 stars American Legend
I especially appreciate the format of ANDREW WYETH. Examples of Wyeth's work are arranged chronologically throughout the book accompanied by comments in a conversational style by the artist about each individual painting. Much of the commentary is about those special places which the artist loves in both Pennsylvaniaand Maine as well as about his friends, neighbors and members of the Wyeth clan. The separate chronologies of Wyeth's personal life and his exhibitions are extremely helpful. I recommend this book to admirers of the artist and also to those who are just becoming acquainted with Wyeth. He is truly an American legend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A biography in pictures
This is a book that will give any Wyeth fan pleasure. When I finally got a copy, it was wish fullfillment. To see 138 of the artist's works with his own comments is a great pleasure. And some of the comments are quite provocative! The prints are top quality and follow the artist's career chronologically. The book also includes a personal chronology of Andrew Wyeth's life, as well as exibitions and a bibliography for those who want to know more. Definitely a keeper! ... Read more
