5-0 out of 5 stars True Value With Hundreds of Van Gogh Plates
Don't miss this one. Cover price is $75 and worth every penny. Now available on the Amazon Marketplace for just a few dollars. All of Van Gogh's best work with hundreds of full-color plates.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best One-Volume Source on van Gogh
This is a very useful book. If you are interested only in the reproductions (good drawings as well as paintings), you will enjoy their high quality--and the breadth of Vincent's work that they cover. If you are interested in primary resources about van Gogh's life--newspaper articles; letters and reminiscences from friends, fellow artists, relatives--this volume is a real treasure. Between the excellent reproductions and the extraordinarily fine collection of biographical materials, this must be the best one-volume source on van Gogh. A great shame that it is out of print. Get one NOW!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond outstanding
If you only want one book about Warhol, this seems a great choice. If you want many books about Warhol, you may find after reading them all that this is the one you'll rely on.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
This year at school, I had to write a research paper about an influential twentieth century American.I chose Andy Warhol. Needing a primary source, I went to the library and used this book.I chose it mainly because it was very big, and at the time I was worried I wouldn't have enough information. When I finally started reading, I discovered 4-0 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated volume of Warhol's work
This is a lavishly illustrated large format book (11"x11") by one time Warhol associate DavidBourdon. It tells the oft told story of how a sickly boy from a poor immigrant family became oneof the mostfamous artists of the twentieth century, who's images of the famous and the mundane still influence art, design fashion and advertising today.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth buying but only just: color photos a big plus!
It is not a little ironic that the photographic record of an artist as prolific and as wrapped up in making and taking film and photographs as Andy Warhol was suffers from a dearth of great photos of the scene of Andy Warhol, The Factory and his Superstars:For real.I mean, I would love to own a book that is just chockablock full of all of the characters, primary, secondary, tertiary and beyond who populate the pages of the many books about Andy Warhol and the Warhol Experience.Unfortunately, there just doesn't seem to be any out there. Most of the books by and about the actors in the Warhol drama are text-based with a few, often the same few, grainy, shadowy, poorly framed black & whites. This book is an attempt by one to bring together more and better photos that fans such as I desire. It is a fair effort but only just. The book is over-size or 'folio' form which is GREAT, and mostly photographs. The text is composed of an opening statement of a couple of pages of over-sized type by the author followed by lots of photographs. The essays contain some valuable information that have the ring of truth to them, but they also seem spontaneous, off-the-cuff and free associative and as a result are not easy to follow. They are more blurted out than intoned, if you get me.The book is printed in the UK on non-glossy heavy stock.I'm unsure if this was done to save money or to impart a flat, gritty, industrial feel to the photos. It is a different look than anything else out there about Warhol and I can live with it; although, I catch myself wondering what this book would look like if done on really expensive, glossy paper with top notch production values. The author explains at one point that his photos were criticized by media critics for being odd and unconventional. He states that today this is recognized as a somewhat ground-breaking and very original and excellent representation of the scene.I think that they are a bit odd and unconventional. There are some great shots there though, and the author gets some portraits of Edie Sedgewick that are heart-breakingly prescient in retrospect. There are a couple great shots of Nico too and, of course, Andy.I was pleased to see some good ones of Taylor Mead and Paul Morissey which is a refreshing change; although, I must say that it would have been cool to see how the author would have represented Andy's mother, Billy Name, and Andrea Feldman.Oh, well, I suppose one must be happy with what one can get.I believe that if you are a huge Warhol admirer such as I you would be mad to not own this.If you are curious but indifferent to Warhol and the scene, right now as I speak you can buy this book right here on Amazon for a fraction of what it is worth and you should buy it NOW.If you don't care for Andy Warhol or care about him this book will certainly not change your mind so don't bother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makos' Lens and Warhol's Lipstick
During a collaborative art-project in the early 1980s, Christopher Makos, a brilliant artist in his own right, transformed the Pop artist Andy Warhol into a bi-gendered diva. Always on the cutting edge, and documenting the... subcultures of NYC and beyond, Makos brilliantly captures Warhol's other persona... anti-normative persona -- it is important to note that Warhol often requested interviewers and the like to call him *Ms. Andy Warhol* -- which is materialized in these photographs.Read more

If you have nearly every Andrew Wyeth book and decided to skip this one, think again!I checked this out by looking at one at the public library and counted over 50 paintings and drawings not found in his other books. It is an absolute must buy for Wyeth fans. The thing that struck me most as an artist and photographer was the many way he found of posing his subjects. It is a textbook on portrait painting, and the reproductions are very good, as good as you are going to get with Wyeth.I find that I go back to this one time and again. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Artwork lets down book
If you buy art books for the art, then this one will leave you sorely disappointed. This book does no justice to the brillant and detailed work of van Eyck, thanks to the small format of the book, poor reproductions, absence of close-ups and limited number of colour images. The price is right - but for a good reason.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable, Erudite, and Sumptuously Illustrated
Jan van Eyck: the Play of Realism manages to be both scholarly and accessible to non-specialist readers. This is not a biography of van Eyck nor is it a comprehensive analysis of all of the painter's work.Harbison addresses a number of issues that played a role in forming van Eyck's astonishing realism and technical virtuosity. The early Netherlandish painters, such as Dirk Bouts, Roger van der Weyden, Robert Campin, Hans Memling, and Petrus Christus, are characterized by their crystalline light, saturated colors, and obsession with clearly-rendered detail. However, Jan van Eyck's realism, especially his sensitively wrought faces, his evocative landscapes, and his almost miraculous ability to render the textures of brocade, metal, glass, armor, and architecture, was the never-surpassed inspiration for so many of his contemporaties and followers.Harbison explores many of the influences that informed van Eyck's style, such as the conflict between institutional and personal Christian piety, the newly-emerging devotions to the Virgin and the Sacred Heart, the interests of his patrons (mostly merchants and court and Church functionaries, rather than his nominal employer, Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy) in how they presented themselves to the world, the practice of pilgrimage, and others. He also discusses the somewhat surprising influence of Byzantine icons on van Eyck's later work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vincent Van Gogh, A Remarkable Man
This short book, briefly describes the life of the depressed Vincent Van Gogh. Within the book, the author Robert Hughes manages to give a brief review of how Van Gogh came to be such a talented man, yet maintain his unhappy life. This book explains in short, Vincent Van Gogh's life as an artist and how he did not become a world renowned until after his death; as well Hughes published the complete visual display of the works of Vincent Van Gogh, with a short description of each. The story of Van Gogh's life begins with his birth. Vincent Van Gogh was born in Holland in 1853, he had seven other siblings, yet he was the oldest.Starting when he was just a child, Van Gogh was very unhappy he was always in bad moods and he was short tempered. During his first job, in a local art gallery, he would always scare away customers by telling them not to buy the paintings, just so they would leave the store. Because of his poor social skills, this job did not last, much like his other jobs he had later in his life. Between all of his unsteady jobs, Van Gogh studied art. After a while he became extremely good. Van Gogh was never one to relate to other people. As the years went by he became more and more miserable, resulting in placement in several asylums. The one thing that seemed to keep him on his feet, yet make him sadder, was his ability to fall in to extremely fast. Though these loves would appear to make him happier, they would often quickly end, making Van Gogh worse off than he originally was. His most unforgettable love was one to his cousin Kee.Vincent and Kee feel in love very fast, and when this relationship ended, Van Gogh became very unstable. While growing in to such a state of medical depression, Van Gogh resulted to slicing off one of his ears, after getting in to a fight with a fellow renowned artist, Paul Gauguin. An example such as this undeniably reflects Van Gogh's slight temper. Painting seemed to be Van Gogh's only release. This book includes and explains all of his paintings. His most famous painting was, The Stary Night, complete in 1889 in this painting, Van Gogh, painted how he imagined the sky at night.Painting such intense paintings is what made Vincent Van Gogh such a remarkable man. Due to his lack of happiness and social skills, Van Gogh never sold but one painting in his life, as well, it is such a shame that Van Gogh, only lived till the age of thirty seven. Unfortunately in 1879 Vincent Van Gogh became such a mess, that he resulted to taking his on life with a bullet. The Portable Van Gogh, with out a doubt portrays the true meaning of what Vincent Van Gogh's life was all about. It allows us as the reader to see all the positive things about Vincent Van Gogh that he himself was unable to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Weston Must-Have
Anyone curious about Weston or wanting to own a representative selection of his work should buy this book. This IS Weston. This is not a few selected prints of his on a single theme, this is a wide representation of the best of Weston's work. One will find for oneself that ALL of Weston's pictures are about passion, that's what makes a picture a Weston. Here in this book are beautifully reproduced plates of his finest images, every one exuding shape and energy, and exquisite composition, none just ordinary. There are images of factories, fields, sand, wood and also the human body, all of which have been captured in all its glory by Weston. He teaches us that there is energy, art and passion in an amazing number of ways.Don't miss this fine book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first time
It was a nude Westons photo of Tina Modoti, layed down on a rural house floor, in Mxico, that had put me on the trail of both. Since then Ive been delighted with the sensibility and the astonishing "color" of the B&W photos of them, nudes bodies, "nude" nature, what ever... It was the first time, almost ten years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Overall Volume of Edward Weston's Work
Review Summary:Edward Weston was trained as a portrait photographer and expanded his vision to include many natural shapes, including seashells, nudes, vegetables, trees, landscapes, and eroded rocks. He also did a little industrial photography, where the forms he saw also revealed pure shapes of interest to him. These shapes usually had a modernist feel to them that brings to mind Plato's theory of forms, pure ideas behind what we see every day. This book is fine overview of all phases of Mr. Weston's career, and contains many interesting and valuable essays about his career. The book is improved by having over 80 images that had not been published before this volume. The 320 duotone images are on very fine paper and are extremely well reproduced. Many would have benefited from being printed in larger sizes. If you decide to own only one book of Edward Weston's work, I suggest you choose this one.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Weston
Being very fond of Mr. Weston's photography, I have seen several books of his work. This is the best to date that I have had the pleasure to review. His landscapes constitute the preponderance of this collection, and they are shown at a size large enough to enable the many fine details in them to stand out. This man had the eye for natural design that sets apart inspiration from the rest.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect selection of pictures
If you don't have any photography book with Weston's pictures, get this one... You will get perfect selection of pictures well printed. It's almost fundamental book for everyone interested in photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Compilation Of Photography As Art!
Edward Weston, more than any other photographer that I admire and have studied, succeeded in creating photography as art. His abstract and voluptuous landscapes of the human form, his photographic sculptures of organic matter, his special vision that captured unnoticed works of art in nature, bring extraordinary passion and life to black and white photography. His exploration of "the universality of basic form" has provided us with masterpieces of photographic art. Much of Weston's best work is featured in this large and exquisite book. Published in London in association with the Huntington Library, printed and bound in Italy, and issued on fine paper approaching photographic print quality, this book is certainly a wonderful legacy of Edward Weston and his work.Read more
