5-0 out of 5 stars Factory Fans Rejoice
I recently gifted this box to an extremely knowledgeable fan of Andy Warhol and the Factory, who gleefully assures me of the excellence of its content. The box includes an explanatory bookletfor the uninitiated (like me), which illuminates the significance of each scrap of paper and memorabilia.Said memorabilia includes replicas of post cards from Warhol to his mother, a letter from Mick Jagger, artwork, and other Warhol ephemera. It's quite fun and interesting, even to someone who lacks a previous base of Warhol knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars The diversity of Warhol hits home via these objects
There are many books on Warhol, but how many ways to inexpensively share in his objects? There are posters (warhol.org has qute a few) but for the price of 1 poster you can have this box.
2-0 out of 5 stars Like Fame, This Pop Box is Interesting for Only 15 Minutes
If you're looking for something of substance about the life & artwork of Andy Warhol or even just a time capsule that captures some of the essence of the Silver Factory era, this isn't it.This "Pop Box" is really just an assortment of less-than-authentic looking reproductions of Warhol's personal correspondence & various other flashy gewgaws, all of whose novelty wears thin within seconds after viewing them.Maybe on an artistic level this collection might have worked if the publisher had made more of an effort in trying to make the contents look authentic rather than just settling for the cheesy looking knock-offs that we were presented with.On the other hand I do think this collection would make a nice introduction for youngsters (maybe combined with Lou Reed & John Cale's excellent Warhol tribute CD "Songs for Drella") who are just starting to learn about Andy Warhol and Pop Art, but that's about it. ... Editorial Review

Lee Friedlander's photographs of women in their birthday suits leave mecold, but they invite comparison with Edward Weston's classic black and white nudes.Bare breasts and buttocks took on another dimension when Weston was behind thecamera; his headless torsos more closely resemble the work of painters and sculptorsthan the passionless images of ladies decapitated by Friedlander and othercontemporary photographers. Charis Wilson's memoir of posing for (and living with)Weston--and her under-the-skin take on the thought process behind his nude studies--isfascinating. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
A number of these photographs are so famous that even the general viewing public recognizes them. That said, this is a very nice collection for those who appreciate fine nude photography. Some of the techniques seem a bit archaic by the standards of our day, but the achievement of these studies is all the more impressive, for that fact.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!
Above all, this is a gorgeous collection of figure studies in black and white. Some photos, like the cover, celebrate the elegance of the human form. Others explore figure as a medium for abstraction - simple shape, almost detached from the person, quite unlike photo as portraiture.
3-0 out of 5 stars He also did a few nude males.
Reproductions are pretty good.Text lacks meat although the photos don't.Incidentally, Weston did photograph a few nude males although you wouldn't know it from this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be misled by opinionated review!
"Ann Arbor" is way off the mark, and did not read the Tintoretto chapter carefully, as it celebrates the depth of the artist's religious imagery. This book is a classic! Gracefully written, deeply learned yet unassuming, and deserving the most attentive close reading you can spare. The introduction is the best, most concise treatment available anywhere of the outstanding contributions of Venetian Renaissance painting.Rosand is possibly the most distinguished scholar now writing about this marvelous topic. Note that the 3 "artist" chapters are not meant to produce a SURVEY of Venetian painting--each has a different THEME that is traced in the art of the master best suited to it. I've been teaching Venetian Renaissance art at the undergrad and grad level for over 20 years, and I can vouch for the excellence of this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good and bad...
This book would have recieved 5 stars if it wasn't for an apparent misunderstanding of Tintoretto on the part of Prof. Rosand. The first section of the book is oustanding, laying out beutifully such necessary background info/theory as the role of the artist in 16th century Venice and (even better) the aesthtics of the disengo vs. colorito / florence vs. venice controversy. Now for the bad: while it is generally a nice, concise overview of Tintoretto's artistic production, Rosand misses the point in terms of expressive content of his art, debunking the notion that Tintoretto communicates a real, personal passion and piety. He also claims that, contrary to popular scholarship, the Council of Trent had little effect on the outcome of his paintings and "any attempt to link associate specific doctrines may be misleading" (approx. quotation regarding the San Giorgio Maggiore "Last Supper).Despite these questionable views (which he contradicts in other sources, by the way) it is a valuable volume to anyone's personal library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A suburb read!
I've read a lot of biographies in my life but nothing holds a candle to Maddow's "Edward Weston: His Life". The way Maddow weaves his words encourages the reader to exalt in the fine art of biography. In other words, Maddow's biography not only becomes a celebration of Weston's life and work but a celebration of the oeuvre itself. A suburb read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Woronov's wild amphetamine-filled time in Warhol's Factory
Before reading this book I only knew Woronov through her delicious work as the mild-mannered murdering dominatrix in the black comedy "Eating Raoul." This book exposes her early years as an actress in Andy Warhol's Factory. It is a scary descent into a drug-filled world filled with drag queens, celebrities, hallucinations, mole people and inner demons. Woronov paints a distinctly unflattering portrait of herself as a violent would-be artist driven to the brink of insanity by amphetamines. It is frustrating because as a protagonist she is so unlikable, but at the same time the Mr. Toad's Wild Ride that she takes us on is compelling. The frustrating part of this book is that we don't really see her ultimate redemption, just her trip through hell.

5-0 out of 5 stars living through the 60's
I'VE READ MANY BOOKS ON THE SIXTIES WARHOL FACTORY SCENE AND ITS FOLLOWERS AND THIS ONE WAS BY FAR THE FUNNIEST,MOST TRUTHFUL ACCOUNT OF THE WHOLE FACTORY SCENE THAT I HAVE READ TO DATE(I READ IT IN A DAY). I BELIEVE MARY'S ACCOUNT OF THE STORY BECAUSE SHE PUTS IT ALL OUT THERE AND PULLS NO PUNCHES.
4-0 out of 5 stars icily seductive
If you're expecting soup cans and canned supertars, you may be in for a shock. This is the squalid, squirming flip side of the swinging sixties, and Warhol is little more than an intermittent background hum. False advertising? not really, for Woronov-star of Chelsea Girls and other Warhol films-serves up a memoir tthat's both seedier, sleazier, and more sophisticated than the standard celebrity tell-all.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful!
I have been looking for a book on Mr. Van Gogh for quite some time that successfully conveys the texture and vivid color that he uses. This book gave me everything that i had been looking for.The "colour library" series that it is a part of is filled with other volumes that depict paintings by various artists in the glory that they were meant to, stopping just short of the vividness of seeing the actual painting in a museum. Not only are they wonderfully done, but they are a steal at the low price they are selling for. While most art books out there cost you an arm and a leg, these volumes give you pure beauty at a very low price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Biography
I just finished this excellent biography this afternoon. After reading Stone's Lust for Life, I was curious to read a regular biography about Van Gogh. This is not exactly a "regular" biography, but I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless. Meier-Graefe blurs the line between historical fiction and biographical nonfiction. The result is really fantastic. I felt like I got a sense of Van Gogh's tortured soul, his complex relationships (with his brother, with Gauguin..), and how it all worked together to create his art. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Portraiture: Vincent van Gogh's great love
From 2000-2001 this exhibition, devoted specifically to Van Gogh's portraits and self-portraits, will travel to Detroit, Boston and Philadelphia. This book is well written and provides graphics of superbquality. My only misgiving comes from the fact that seven different writerscontributed to the commentary of the book which makes the flow of the textsomewhat disjointed. While very well researched, other exhibitioncatalogues (those by Ronald Pickvance, for example) take a work-by work, single author approach and, as a result, the commentary is more clear andconcise. Still, it's a minor criticism of an excellent book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars essay book
This is one of those books to use when you have to do an essay/report about Grant wood.

3-0 out of 5 stars Exhaustively researched, and yet seriously lacking
American Gothic the book is as enigmatic as the painting it purports to chronicle. The author while quite well versed in literature and history, shows a definite lack of chops when it comes to Art History.

Steven Biel's "American Gothic: A Life of America's Most Famous Painting" is amusing, informative and anecdotal. This book provides a broad view of one of America's most well known paintings, Grant Wood's American Gothic. The painting has become a part of America's cultural identity.

Bravo to Walter Liedtke for his sense of humor, see below. The fact that 17 out of 24 did not understand his subtle comments on himself, he did write most of the book, is testimony as to lack of discernment of those who read these reviews.I have heard his lecture on the exhibition and all he says is absolutely true.Actually, his comments on himself are rather modest.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Monument to My Genius
Words cannot describe the impact this weighty volume has had on me.From the moment I held it in my trembling hands, I was hooked. The rich, carefully crafted prose is a delight to the eye and the imagination. Its author is undoubtedly a man of breath-taking vision who has reconstructed the 17th-century past with unique skills of research and analysis. His character shines through in every page and the reader cannot help but conjure up in his or her mind a dazzling image of a dark tall handsome curator with beautifully slick and greased black hair, a whiff of moustache, and sparkling gold-rimmed glasses.Every inch a man of learning.I could go on - and I will.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent
This is a catalogue published in conjunction with the exhibition "Vermeerand the Delft School" held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, from March 8 to May 27, 2001 and The National Gallery, London, from June 20 to September 16, 2001. It is written by Walter Liedtke, Curator in the Department of European Paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York with contributions from eight other art curators and historians. This is a hefty book reflecting this monumental ehibition which includes 15 of the 35 known works attributed to Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) who spent his entire life in Delft. Other prominent 17th Century artists include Pieter de Hooch, Gerard Houckgeest and one of my favorites, Carel Fabritius, who was killed in a munitions explosion in 1654 at the age of 32. The catalogue is 640 pages containing 526 illustrations with 225 colorplates. The quality of the colorplates is good. The history of Delft and the development of "The Delft School" is thoroughly researched. In addition to the artists mentioned there are many beautiful paintings by artists who are relatively unknown. This is a catalogue where the interested reader will spend the rest of his life perusing. There is much to be mined here. The exhibition is worth a journey. ... Read more
