5-0 out of 5 stars Craftsmen in the air.
The sixty-five photographs in this book are probably the best of the thousand Lewis Hine took during the construction of the Empire State Building.Several are now the standard image used to depict industrial output during the Depression and rightly so.Hine concentrates on the workers rather than the actual building and you can see just how precarious some of their activity is.Years before hardhats and workman's comp hundreds of seasoned craftsmen managed to erect a building nearly a quarter of a mile high in 410 days and weighing 365,000 tons.5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Memories
This book is wonderful. The pictures bring back a time in our country's history that was hopeful and expansive - a nice antidote to today's closed attitudes.Anyone with an interest in American history and the story of one our momumental achievements should have this book. P.S. Children love this book too -- my two sons take it off the shelf almost every night!

4-0 out of 5 stars Reaching Towards Heaven--An Empire of a Feat
I like architecture. I like buildings. And I adore The Empire State building in New York City. (as if I need to mention location) This is aninformative book by Mr. Doherty and others giving us a detailed view intodreams coming to life of the then tallest building in the world. How it wasbuilt, human drama behind the scenes, how fast it went up---4 stories aweek, the limestone that was only brought in from Indiana, and otherfascinating information.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Publisher
"In 1930, Lewis Hine (1874-1940) was commissioned to photograph the construction of the Empire State Building. He documented the project from the ground up, going to great and dizzying lengths to get good shots of the work in progress. Today, Hine's amazing pictures constitute a priceless record of a memorable event in American history. 30 black-and-white photographs reproduced by four-color process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A peek into a lost world
Hine was a documentary photographer whose images offer a peek into a lost world. His credo was "Work itself has ever been one of the deepest satisfactions that come to the restless human soul."That was not something he figured out while working in some summer job during his college days; he was personally acquainted with hard labor, hunger and poverty - as the text in the book explains. The photographs are of immigrants at Ellis Island, tenement dwellers, child laborers, rural families, and construction workers building the Empire State Building.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compassionate View of Child Labor, Sweatshops and Tenements
Review Summary: Lewis Hine was a pioneer in documenting the working conditions of children. His poignant images of coal mines, sweatshops, and factories shocked America into passing its first legislation to regulate and reduce child labor. Generations of Americans have benefited as a result.Review: The foreword by Walter Rosenblum describes Lewis Hine as being "a born teacher." Mr. Rosenblum recounts Mr. Hine's generosity in writing a letter or recommendation for him saying that Mr. Rosenblum was "a new and better Hine." This example captures his compassion and generosity towards others. He never saw a person he didn't respect and have compassion for. Each image in this fine book contains that "compassionate vision." His subjects included immigrants at Ellis Island and in their first tenement homes, working conditions in sweatshops and factories, the everyday life of the working poor, and the building of the Empire State Building (with views from the 100th floor girders). 5-0 out of 5 stars Humblily!
It will be presumptuous to place my opinion next to all the worthy accolades this work has received.
4-0 out of 5 stars Art 440 review
Men At Work by Lewis Hine is a beautiful collection of 69 photographic studies of men and machines originally published in 1932.This book is a great example of men controlling machines in order to benefit their lives, rather than the machines controlling their lives. Hine was able to find normal subjects and turn them into to amazing, interseting images. Through these photogrphs he catches the positive side of life which is very enjoyable to look at. There are also 18 extra photographs of the construction of the Empire State Building. Each page has a detailed description of the photographs to let the reader know exactly what he was shooting. The Empire Sate Building photos are quite amazing especially when you think about Hine himself that high off the ground taking these photos. In addition to the Empire State Building shots, are photographs of railroad workers and coal miners which no one had ever really recognized before. Overall this is a great book at an excellent price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Men and their machines.
Lewis Hine had an affinity with the workingman.Jonathan Doherty, in the introduction to this book, says "Hine looked at workingmen with his camera and found a strength in them and a pride in their work that was common to all".He had a point because the photos show men controlling their machines and not the other way round, with these photos you can see craftsmen at work.Read more
