5-0 out of 5 stars If Pictures are words
If pictures are words, this is an epic novel in the tradition of Dickens or Tolstoy. Read carefully and bring along the tissues so that -when you reach the final chapters -you won't leave the pages damp, as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Photographer
I waited in anticipation for this book's release. It was worth the wait.Annie Liebovitz, one of the world's most talented photographers, has released a book that will touch even those who have a limited interest in photograpy. From the opening pages to the closing pages, it's very evident that this is not just another Annie Liebovitz release.Instead, it's a special edition from her heart and soul.Whether it's photographs of her family and friends or famous people from throughout the world, she tells a story that you will not easily forget.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, interesting and superb @}->---
Even if you aren't into photography, you can certainly appreciate the quality, professionalism and beauty of Annie's work. She's one of the most trusted photographers around and she's been in the business for so long doing amazing work. This book is delightful to look at.

This is an excellent resource for anyone looking to understand traditional building materials and methods. The printing is excellent. The actual plates from the original work are valuable not only for the technical information they contain, but the artistry with which they were composed is superb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing photography -- no narrative -- great coffee table book
As other reviewers have said, the photography is top notch.I will focus my review on the difference between this book and his "classic", A Child Is Born. When I was deciding on my purchase I did not know which book would be better for my purposes, so I hope to shed some light on that for others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful images of the human lifespan
Lennart Nilsson took the first image of a living human embryo in the 1960s and stunned the world. Now, Life is an absolutely amazing book of images documenting human life from DNA through fetal development and birth. The second half of the book focuses on the human body, it's organs, tissues the things that eventually threaten life - bacteria and viruses.

The photography in this book is proof positive of the miraculousness of life and the beginning of a human soul.I heartily recommend this book for a deeper look at the creation of a baby and its subsequent growth. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A View Inside A Shrine to Self
The Windsors, while they were living, epitomized style, glamour, and wit. Ultimately theirs was a wasted life, empty of meaning in the end. From the heady days of their scandalous romance, life was all downhill, a private struggle to conserve their dignity in the aftermath of the abdication. To fill this emptiness and lack of purpose in life, the Duchess obsessed on perfection; of herself, of the things she collected and of the table she set. The Windsor's sous chef spent hours sorting salad leaves into leaves of exactly the same size to be set before their guests. Their relationship was a hollow recreation of the childhood the Duke never could leave behind. Moulin de la Tuilerie, their country home outside of Paris, was the York Cottage of Edward's youth reborn. Wallis herself was Queen Mary, obsessively arranging the display of small objets and cosseting the little boy who was King. A long time servant said, "They had nothing and no-one. They were just two lonely old people." Suzy Menkes takes the reader on an interesting tour through not only of the tangible objects of this relationship, but of the relationship itself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the price
An excellent book providing all of the basic knowledge anyone could want on the subject of photography. A bit expensive, but the quality of the pictures makes it worth the price of admission.

3-0 out of 5 stars Am I the only one who found this jumbled and confusing?
Sure this book has EVERYTHING you need to know about photography and how to develop things, but these people know NOTHING about layout design.I just don't know where to look, where to read, and what to do next.If I didn't have an instructor, I wouldn't know what to do with my camera. It is very hard to find what you need in this book, much less go through a chapter. For people wanting to learn about photography, may I suggest the much cheaper book by National Geographic? It has much more clearly defined chapters though it does not have as much information overall (for example, no information about how to develop film).

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic guide to film photography
This seminal photographic guidebook, now in its eighth edition, should be basic reading for anyone planning to pursue photography as a career or hobby. Although it deals primarily with film photography, I think you'll find that a thorough grounding in the fundamentals will help you become a better, well-rounded photographer in the digital realm, too. Many of the photographic concepts covered here have been continued into digital photography, whether through digital camera features or by means of "digital darkroom" image editors like Photoshop.Start here, and you'll never regret it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't wait to read it!
I'm a big fan of Alain de Botton's writing, so when I saw that his newest book, "The Architecture of Happiness" would not be released in the US until October 2006, I ordered it directly from Amazon.uk. I read it in two or three days and was not disappointed. Botton has a great way of connecting the writings and thoughts of the great minds of world civilization to everyday human experiences. In this case, to the kinds of buildings (public and private) we build or aspire to build, or conversely, tolerate and settle for. The book is amply illustrated. As nice as these photographs and illustrations are, Botton's writing is so precise and illustrative in its own right that the illustrations are not always necessary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Erudite, colorful, delightful!
[Notabene: this is a review of the Dutch translation of this book.] I have read only one book by Alain de Botton so far, namely his eminently readable but highly imaginative and evocative 'The Art of Travel'. I was so enamoured by that particular book, that I highly anticipated his 'The Architecture of Happiness', and bought it without any doubts as what to expect (and so should anyone else who loved his 'The Art of Travel, I believe ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to art
I just puchased the latest edition of Artforms which includes the CD-ROM with interactive explanations on elements of art. Artforms is a great introduction to art and art history for those who have always wanted to understand how to look at art and interpret it for themselves. Over half the book is dedicated to elements and principles of art and craftsmanship. I use this book in training my art museum volunteers so that they have a clear understanding of why some works of art have strong visual impact while others do not. I like how the book uses a mix of artwork from various time periods, media and cultures to explain the elements and principles. Far too many art/art history books become a history of painting, and Artforms represents a variety of art forms other than 2D. The history portion of the book is a gloss of art history, but good enough for someone just delving into art. The book is easy to read, relatively jargon-free and has a nice glossary at the end. I wish the CD had more information on it that you could use in a classroom setting, projecting it on an overhead, but that is my instructor point of view. For someone studying at home it is quite nice. To sum up, the book is so good I now own two editions and will continue to recommend it to people who want to understand how to look at art. ... At the beginning of 2005, Frank Warren launched a new blog called PostSecret as an experiment in community art, inviting strangers to mail him anonymous postcards that made art out of their innermost secrets and then posting a selection of the cards every week on his blog. Within a year, his blog was one of the five most popular in the world, and his first book, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening and highly recommended!
To say that this book will reveal you a lot about the inner lives of people would be an underestimation. It goes even beyond that and allows you to connect with the others, to feel their happiness, sadness, triumph and depression. "Postsecret" gave me so many aha experiences that may compare only with the secrets which I learnt from the bestseller "scientfically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex". People have secrets for very good reasons and once you learn some of them you get an (unfair) advantage over the others. It is hard to predict what will be your reaction to the secrets revealed in this book but I am sure that it will leave a lasting impression in you just as every bold and highly valuable book does. "Postsecret" is one of the few books that may change your life and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frank, You've Done Something Amazing.
My dad bought me this book because I made him go to the PostSecret Exhibit in Reading, Pa. He didn't know what it was going into and after seeing the exhibit and reading the book, he left in complete tears. This book is wonderful because it's like re-visiting the exibit over and over again. There is something very powerful about how reading other peoples secrets makes you realize how you are not alone. This is a book of humanity. So worth it.

I love this book.I love this project.I've been a fan of the website for awhile, and am glad many of the postcards have been published in book form. This is the type of art project that reminds you of the pain and beauty in humanity. You're also glad that there are other people out there in the world going through some of the same things that you are.Amazing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent value
i don't usually rave over books but this one far exceeded my expectations. my whole workflow has been improved not to mention the improvment my images have received after reading this book. I don't come from a photography background and photoshop tends to overwhelm me. But photoshop is unavoidable for me- my work is increasingly tied to my photographs. I had been suffering from repeat editing, redoing edits when i would learn new tricks and generally stumbling thorugh photoshop as an absolute novice. But now i feel confident to really do it right in one session and move on. The chapters and sections are well laid out and to the point (despite the sometimes rambling jokiness). After a once-through I know where to look when i come across an issue.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Photoshop for Digital Photos
His writing style may be a little cutesy, but most of that is concentrated in the chapter intros which you can safely skip - there's absolutely nothing about photo editing in the chapter intros. They don't even introduce the chapter.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love his style
This is a great book, the style is easy to understand his tips.

Also known as "The Cinematographers Bible", this thick hand-sized pocket book is an absolute must for anybody who owns or uses a 16mm, Super 16mm, 35mm, Super 35mm or 70mm motion picture camera (movie cameras). IT WILL NOT TEACH YOU CINEMATOGRAPHY! 5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is A "Must Have"
For all design professionals, modernism addicts, and even the layperson. The book is filled with wonderful images culled from a lifetime of decorating.Dorothy Draper's style was always fancyful, playful and above all else comfortable~she was not a devotee of the Eames pared down sterile and functional school of design. If you are done with Danish, numb over Knoll, and way past Panton~~~check out "In the Pink:Dorothy Draper:America's Most Fabulous Decorator"she will have you going for Baroque!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for establishing your comics
Scott Mccloud's Making Comics resembles a constitution for those want to establish their comics either as a hobby or as a carrier. It goes through so many details regarding creating your panels, establishing scenes, storytelling, characters designs and feelings, drawing styles, and the list goes on. Simply, the book gives you a guideline for establishing a living world in papers. What makes "Making Comics" unique is that it can teach you how to be a comic artist even if you're not good enough in drawing. The book illustrates the fundamentals of drawings comics and let you be creative for starting your own comic book. All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book, and it will help me a lot for my comics' drawings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disagree with review below--this is a remarkable book!
The previous reviewer accuses Scott McCloud of lacking the authority to write a guide to making comics. But McCloud's book is based on clear demonstration, not on authority.
