Great book
This book is great for beginers and good for someone a little further along. It gives you most airbrush tricks that you'l need to paint whatever you want to paint.

If you only buy one airbrush book, this is the one!
I hate to gush but this is, imho, the single best book on airbrushing that I've seen. It covers technique from beginner to advanced. The instructions are straight forward. I suppose they could seem boring if you're an advanced artist. Since I learn from even a rehash of what I already new, I wasn't bored.
If you can only get one book on airbrush...

Not what is expected
I must admit that, after I recived my book,I thumbed through and was amazed at the artistic renditions that I saw on the pages.I was excited to delve into The New Scrathcboard and learn the techniques and practices that helped to produce such fine work. Wonderful book for experienced painters to expand horizions
This is a wonderful book for experienced painters with that want to expand their horizons or for anyone who wants background information on clay-surface techniques. It shows how a wide range of painting and drawing techniques can be used in conjunction with scratchboard techniques to create a stunning array of results on these very versatile surfaces. Is it really about scratchboard?
I bought this book online, without having physically seen it before. For this reason my first impression was not the best. In fact, at first glance it didn't appear to contain any scratchboard work at all. Scratchboard, to me, is high-contrast black ink and white clay, with the possibility of color after the black and white has been rendered. You won't find this book geared to my definition. Chapters 3 and 4 contain the majority of the "black and white" pieces. Chapter 3 is small and deals pre-inked clay surfaces (like Clayboard Black). It has a few examples of the traditional scratchboard look, but most of them have color added. Chapter 4 is larger and deals with applying india ink to the white clay surface. I have to admit, there are some really nice pieces in this chapter, but rather than looking like scratchboard, they tend to look more like ink and wash. My favorite is the one mentioned in the main review, with four ravens dancing on a fallen totem pole. Very nice.Read more

the big book of airbrush
Excellent source of information for all levels of airbrushing. A complete and valuable ready reference in many techniques and styles. A must for your collection.

There are better overall airbrush books.
All airbrush books have to explain the technical stuff of the little machines you paint with, but this one moves quickly on to paints, the several masking techniques, and such art basics as perspective, shading and color mixing -- obviously, for people who have no prior art background.Halfway through the book, we finally get to using the dratted thing.They also show that truly fine "airbrush paintings" still require the brush or colored pencil for the finer points.

Not for the hobbiest
If you plan to get serious about airbrush, buy this book. The author takes you from baby steps to mountain climbing. While there is a fair amount of time spent on seemingly non-airbursh topics like the fundamentals of perspective, shadows and drawing in general, the examples and exercises take the reader to the deepest part of the art of the airbrush. Well layed out and enlightening. The book could, however, benefit from the addition of more intermediate exercises. ... Read more

Disappointing
As a beginner I feel I almost wasted my money. It actually doesn't tell tou "HOW" to do things, it tells you "DO" this and "DO" that, "DRAW" a line hear... It doesn't explain why they use light colors first in some projects, darker tones first in others (so how do I procede??). Though half of the book is addressed to T-shirt airbrushing, no instructions are given on how to prepare cotton for your paintjob, how to heat-fix the colors...
Fair book but, not for the beginner.
Excellent graphics. Great quality in the physical aspect of the book and the colored graphics contianed in it. But, it definitely does not help the beginner much. It jumps steps and the photographs do not help to decipherwhat the author is trying to explain. Not for the NOVICE

This book has inspired to become an airbrush artist!
This book has 22 step-by-step demonstrations of all the basic-level aurbrush techniques! It says what type of airbrushes are used for what type of airbrushing! Great! just that!!
If you are interested in pinstripping, go get this book!!! I'm just starting in the field, but this book contains excelent information, nice step by step tutorials, and great pictures.Maybe it doesn't have too much patterns, but who cares? if you understand the technics, you have to start pushing yourself in making some designs on your own.

I found this a very informative and inspiring book. I've dabbled in signs and lettering for thirty years and it inspired me to get out my brushes and lay down some lines.

walter foster publishing ruins what they touch
I held Andrew Loomis's books in the highest esteem. Then walter foster came along and decided to cut cost by publishing every third page and discarding everything in between. Think this statement is absurd! Compare Andrew Loomis's books BEFORE and AFTER walter foster got his hands on them.

Just not that impressed.
I'm a true bigginer in airbrushing and I bought this book along with two others and this one just isn't very impressive. Its about as thick as a thick magazine and it really doesn't go into much detail.I only paid $3 for it used so i DO think I got my monies worth.I'm not dissapointed just not impressed.Could be because the other two books i ordered were just so much better.Big Book of airbrushing and Complete Studio Handbook.Most impressed by the Complete Studio Handbook from my beginners perspective.

A Useful Guide
I remember buying my first airbrush over a decade ago. A Thayer and Chandler model. As a naive teenager, I was so eager to get stuck in, I didn't realize the paint was supposed to be diluted into liquid form first. Much to my frustration, nothing happened. That was before I bought this book, succinctly titled "Airbrush Painting". It is an extremely useful art-book for any artist.
It has everything in it from basic gradients, to complex photo retouching techniques.Everything is there.If you manage to find this book anywhere, you should buy it immediately.It is INDESPENSABLE! ... Read more

Must be reprinted
I found the Swedish edition in a shop in Stockholm. It's a great book about great paintings. Very instructive! Would love to have a copy in English, though.

Positively eye opening! Erotic painting at its best
If you know and like Sorayama's work, this book is a must. The size and the printing quality are very good and this is essential to really appreciate his work. There are very different works and of course some are (meant to be) shocking, but if you are looking for a "hot" book, this is one to buy !

My introduction to Hajime Sorayama
I purchased this book a few years ago and was blown away.I paid more for it than the price here but it was well worth it.Some of my friends find some of the images shocking but they still enjoyed the book as a whole.I have books by other artist who do airbrush work but no one has made me reach for the page just to make sure that the image I am looking at is not real.If you enjoy airbrush art and the realism that it renders this book is a must have.

Unusual Depth and Accessibility
This is an excellent overview of impressionist painting as well as a good introduction to painting methodology in a particular historical context.The author provides the reader with a basis for really understanding the aesthetic agenda of the impressionists by explaining the context in which it developed; traditional academic painting, material changes in the artist's media, the influence of photography, political undercurrents and broader social change, as well as the character of each individual painter.
Very detailed and inspiring
There seem to be so many books on the techniques of the old Masters, but it's very difficult to find books on actual painting techniques of the Impressionists. This book discusses this topic in extreme detail. Small sections of paintings are magnified with arrows pointing to specific areas, describing how they were probably done and with which paint colors.Read more

This was fun
OK, the nudity part was what made this book intriguing, but it isn't lewd.GREAT paint jobs.Each photograph or series of photos tells a very short story.They are accompanied by quotations which enhance or explain the photographs.Give this book as a gift to someone who appreciates photography, art, humor and the human experience.The entire volume takes about 15 or 20 minutes to thoroughly enjoy, but you may want to repeat the process a couple of times.Some of the camouflage paint jobs are simply amazing!

Valuable resource on dyes and fabric paints
The name turned me away at first, as I am not dyeing for the theater. That was a mistake.While I don't need the chapters on how to set up a dye shop for a theatre, other information provided in this book is hard to come byelsewhere. Covers fiber reactive dyes, acid dyes, 1:2 metal complex dyes,direct dyes, basic dyes for acrylics, disperse dyes, metallics, textilepaints, screen printing, 4 different discharge dyeing pastes, batik, blueprinting and brown printing on fabric (or whole garments) using light,marbling, airbrush. Much more thorough treatment of potential hazards thanany other dyeing book I've seen.
