5-0 out of 5 stars If Pictures are words
If pictures are words, this is an epic novel in the tradition of Dickens or Tolstoy. Read carefully and bring along the tissues so that -when you reach the final chapters -you won't leave the pages damp, as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Photographer
I waited in anticipation for this book's release. It was worth the wait.Annie Liebovitz, one of the world's most talented photographers, has released a book that will touch even those who have a limited interest in photograpy. From the opening pages to the closing pages, it's very evident that this is not just another Annie Liebovitz release.Instead, it's a special edition from her heart and soul.Whether it's photographs of her family and friends or famous people from throughout the world, she tells a story that you will not easily forget.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, interesting and superb @}->---
Even if you aren't into photography, you can certainly appreciate the quality, professionalism and beauty of Annie's work. She's one of the most trusted photographers around and she's been in the business for so long doing amazing work. This book is delightful to look at.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing photography -- no narrative -- great coffee table book
As other reviewers have said, the photography is top notch.I will focus my review on the difference between this book and his "classic", A Child Is Born. When I was deciding on my purchase I did not know which book would be better for my purposes, so I hope to shed some light on that for others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful images of the human lifespan
Lennart Nilsson took the first image of a living human embryo in the 1960s and stunned the world. Now, Life is an absolutely amazing book of images documenting human life from DNA through fetal development and birth. The second half of the book focuses on the human body, it's organs, tissues the things that eventually threaten life - bacteria and viruses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant photography...
The photography in this book is proof positive of the miraculousness of life and the beginning of a human soul.I heartily recommend this book for a deeper look at the creation of a baby and its subsequent growth. ... Read more

I picked up this book years ago when it came out.Outstanding photographs throughout.Since then I married and moved a lot of my books into an office.I recently rearranged my office and found the Leibovitz book and looked through it again.I still am impressed with the images even after about 5 years of not viewing them.Really a time capsule of collected photos.

    Editorial Review

After September 11th, 2001, the Ground Zero site in New York City was classified as a crime scene and only those directly involved in the recovery efforts were allowed inside. The press was also prohibited from the site, but with the help of the Museum of the City of New York and sympathetic city officials, award-winning photographer Joel Meyerowitz managed to obtain unlimited access. By ingenuity and sheer determination, he was the only photographer granted unimpeded right of entry into Ground Zero. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shocking with a presentation that brings a fresh unseen angle
The images of September 11th are ones that are familiar to anybody in the western world and beyond. The death tolls as well as the political and sociological ramifications of these events on the following years and years to come have also been the subject of much discussion. However the glory of Joel Meyerowitz's photographic collection is that it ignores all the larger political manoeuvering and focuses on the minutia.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Fitting Memorial on the Fifth Anniversary of September 11:
We still struggle with knowing how to think about the events of 9/11/2001 - and with how to depict them in the popular media. The reactions to the films "World Trade Center" and "Flight 93" have been all over the map. For some, it seems too soon to reopen the raw wounds that the tragedies of that day inflicted on our national psyche. For others, remembering the events and trying to make sense of them is part of the healing from those wounds.
5-0 out of 5 stars Astonishing

    Editorial Review

Scottish artist Andy Goldsworthy uses a seemingly infinite array of purely natural materials, from snow and ice to leaves, stone, and twigs in the creation of his one-of-a-kind sculptures. Unlike such artists as Christo and Michael Hiezer, whose works leave definite marks on the landscape, Goldsworthy's approach is to interrupt, shape, or in some other way temporarily alter or work with nature to produce his fragile, mutable pieces. To create "Broken Icicle," for example, Goldsworthy was only able to work on the sculpture in the early morning, when temperatures were below freezing. As with most of his works, ultimately, the materials used to create this piece returned to their natural state, leaving no trace of the artwork's existence save for the stunning photos in this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Renew your sense of wonder
Andy Goldworthy clearly has an astonishing way of interpreting the world around him. I've grown so weary of photography books filled to capacity with picture postcard scenic overlooks and color-saturated closeups of bees on flower petals. Goldworthy embeds himself in the natural world; all the while remaining in touch with his surroundings, he visually articulates a wonderfully unique re-interpretation that is at once both fresh and startling. As a visual arts educator, I find this book to be a superb exemplar and asset for introducing students to ways of creatively thinking outside the box. For me personally, I can go back time and again to re-examine Goldworthy's concepts, designs, and images and always find something new to admire. Beautifully reproduced, bound and printed, one word sums this book up: Wow.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic resume of the all quality of Goldsworthy
A fantastic review of the large capacities of a great built in nature. We havet not the time to be anoyed reading this book. So impressed that I buy another one to offer to someone special.

5-0 out of 5 stars He is so smart
Modern artists are often attacked because on the basis of "I could have thought of that."And true, you might say that about any given page in this book.Yet it's unbelievable that one man thought of all of them.Look at the photos in this book, and you'll see art everywhere the next time you walk outside.I could cover a wall with every page that is worth framing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond art book, beyond photography
It is not really a book, but an art object: accordion folded and neatly ensconced in a box, its heavy cardboard structure makes it a durable thing, one that transcends the notion of a mere "book." It is an object of intrinsic beauty and the mere holding of it in one's hands conveys the good taste, fine quality, and the superb craftmanship that were blended to create PORTRAITS.
4-0 out of 5 stars Many great portraits ...
... but it's not a book. I personally did not care for the strange format, which has a sleeve, a back and a front cover, and a sort of concertina arrangement of the intervening text and pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Portraits' was a beautiful composition of Avedon's work
Not only was I excited about the low price offered by amazon.com for this book, I couldn't believe the wealth of information it withheld. The book itself is innovating, working as an accordian-style setup with text on one side and full-size, beautiful portraits on the other. The written portions spoke of Avedon in his early years, what his inspirations were, and how the affected his work later on. As a young photographer, this was valuable information for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ansel Adams of Color Photography!
Galen Rowell pioneered "participatory (wilderness) photography," in which the photographer becomes an active creative participant in fine-art image making. An accomplished outdoorsman and adventurer, his deep emotional connection to nature pervades virtually all of his photographs. Another signature characteristic is his vivid use of color during the "magic hour" (at sunrise and sunset); indeed, it is arguably true that Rowell was as much a "master of color" as Ansel Adams was a master of black & white. (It is fitting that he received the Ansel Adams Award for his contributions to the art of wilderness photography in 1984.) The life of this extraordinary artist was cut tragically short in 2002 when the plane carrying Rowell and his wife (Barbara Rowell, herself an accomplished photographer) crashed as they were both returning home from a Workshop in the Sierra Mountains.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice for Galen Rowell Fans
Coming around 4 years after the untimely death of Galen and his wife Barbara, this book does not disappoint those who enjoyed his photography. I certainly do and have for many years. This book contains a lot of photos (over 175) from early stuff to photos from his last expedition for Nat Geo. Divided into 7 main sections, you will see many of the most famous of his photos but what I like is that there are photos in there I was not familiar with. I have nearly all of his books so I like seeing stuff I have not seen before. For instance a few climbing photos of Ron Kauk and Lynn Hill, or one of 2 skiers descending the Ruth glacier in Alaska, or one from Lake Powell. Also nice are the little spot essays of some of the photos such as one by his daughter Nicole about the Lynx photo from Alaska. I'm not sure the printing of the book is of superior quality. Some of the colors seem off and a lot of grain shows up. That really is my only complaint. I am very happy to have this book, although I would rather see photos from his latest expeditions instead of a retrospective. This book is certainly worth the money. ... Read more

The book itself is large and heavy; even so, a number of the photographs are spread across both pages--something that in my experience detracts from a picture's visual appeal. The photographs are in black-and-white and color; many of the color photographs are very well thought out as a total ensemble.
    5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect 10!
This is the most beautiful book of the most exquisite women I've ever seen. The superbly reproduced photographs are not in the least pornographic, but intensely erotic. The women reveal themselves to you in private rooms, villas, mansions, etc., sometimes in stockings or erotic lingerie, in provocative, intriguing and very classy poses. If you love gazing at gorgeous women, you won't regret buying this book, which is a bargain at the selling price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book
The photography and the text of this book has been described in other reviews, but I want to add that this is now one of the most beautiful books that I own. The typesetting is flawless, the paper is of a much higher weight than I have seen in other monographs, and, of course, the reproductions are class. These points are magnified by the sheer size of the book-- check the dimensions given in the details above. The book is a work of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars DK doesn't disappoint
Well I was ready to dish out some more money for another DK book.. Which I currently own Animal and Earth. I was planning on going with Plant next, but then I saw this one sitting there... I flipped thru it and knew right away this was the next DK book for me. Breath taking pictures of terrain, plants and animals from the rainforest. Not so much wording as DK's other books.. but the pictures are enough. Don't ever be afraid to buy a DK visual book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book for parents and children
My [....] son and I stumbled across this book last night and we were absolutely captivated. He is currently studying plants in science and many of the photographs were of plants discussed in class. The photographs mesmerized both of us and we ended up buying the book.I stayed awake to the early morning hours slowly turning the pages as I saw plants and animals in ways I had never before seen.
5-0 out of 5 stars A true gem
This book is one of the most spectacular collections of nature photography I have ever seen. The author spent 16 years traveling across the tropics, capturing with his camera the very essence of the rainforest ecosystem. Ranging from majestic panoramas of the forest to intimate portraits of birds and mammals (how did he get those wide angle portraits of monkeys?!) to fantastic close ups of invertebrates and mushrooms, this book explores tropical humid forest at all its levels. The message of this magnificent collection is clear - rainforests are the pinnacle of life on Earth, a jewel-studded crown of Nature; they are libraries of genetic and biotic diversity that must be saved at all cost.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where'd everybody go?
Where's Uma, Charlize, Drew, Joan, Julie Brown, Tiffany, Traci Bingham, Katerina Witt and others? I was expecting more than this. Don't get me wrong though-it's a really good book but I really do hope they publish more volumes! It could have been a lot better.

4-0 out of 5 stars a look back
I enjoyed this book. It has some very iconic images, especially the Marilyn Monroe pics. I was a little disappointed, however as it is by no means a complete overview of all the celebrities who have appeared in the magazine. They seem to have arbitrarily choosen who to include.Where are, Tiffany,Vanity, Kristy Swanson,Joanie Lawler, and most puzziling Joan Collins? I guess they'll be in volume 2. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind blowing
Having met James and briefly discussing his work, only makes me appreciate the book that much more. When I asked him why he did what he did and why he risked life and limb to capture some of these images, he simply replied "People have got to know."
5-0 out of 5 stars The most amazing and moving photojournalism
When I first looked at Inferno by James Nachtwey it was hard to believe what I was looking at. The images of the harsh and inhumane conditions in which Romanian ophanes are kept, the starving and impoverished people of Somalia, the battlegrounds and devastion of Bosnia and Chechyna, the social and economic divisions in India, and the terrible images of Rwanda that defy human comprehension. Nachtwey combines amazing artistic abilities that remain in one's mind with the raw and unrefined images of the harshest places in the world. To look at Nachtwey's pictures is more than just looking, but experiencing. When looking at these pictures you experience an intense mixture of emotions from anger, fear, sadness, and struggling to grasp how this acts could be done.

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure for any U2 fan
No words can describe the beauty, quality and detailed work of this book; you can really tell the dedication Anton Corbijn put into it, as well as his loyalty to the band through all these years. It's not only a masterpiece describing through pictures and notes the history of the greatest rock band in the world, but also a must have for any major U2 fan. It's personalized album type format makes it a wonderful experience both to read and look, and the quality and art work of all the pictures is out of this world; it's almost like you grow closer to the band! I loved it and can't get enough of it!!It's worth every cent. Really!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good backgrounder
The iconic photos in this book are an essential addition to any U2 fans collection. It's great to see other shots taken in the same session as the well known images that have graced the magazines and album covers over the years. Best of all are the explanations behind the shots and the honesty that comes across from the photographer and the band.

    Editorial Review

Muscle men, midgets, socialites, circus performers and asyluminmates: in the 1950s and '60s, photographer Diane Arbus (1923-1971) cast herstrong eye on them all, capturing them as no one else could. Herdocumentary-style photos of society's margin-walkers were objective andreverential, while she often portrayed so-called normal people looking farmore freakish than the freaks. Her powerful work was well-received in itsday. Arbus received Guggenheim Fellowships in 1963 and 1966 and wasincluded in a major show at MOMA in 1967. But her work entered the realm ofnear-myth after her 1971 suicide.
