5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great pictures
Nearly every photograph in this book evoked a memory, whether good or bad. Some were disturbing, as they were meant to be, but many were uplifting. And it was neat to see how the cover art had changed over the years, and how Life's priorities have shifted. ... Read more

Editorial Review

After September 11th, 2001, the Ground Zero site in New York City was classified as a crime scene and only those directly involved in the recovery efforts were allowed inside. The press was also prohibited from the site, but with the help of the Museum of the City of New York and sympathetic city officials, award-winning photographer Joel Meyerowitz managed to obtain unlimited access. By ingenuity and sheer determination, he was the only photographer granted unimpeded right of entry into Ground Zero. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shocking with a presentation that brings a fresh unseen angle
The images of September 11th are ones that are familiar to anybody in the western world and beyond. The death tolls as well as the political and sociological ramifications of these events on the following years and years to come have also been the subject of much discussion. However the glory of Joel Meyerowitz's photographic collection is that it ignores all the larger political manoeuvering and focuses on the minutia.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Fitting Memorial on the Fifth Anniversary of September 11:
We still struggle with knowing how to think about the events of 9/11/2001 - and with how to depict them in the popular media. The reactions to the films "World Trade Center" and "Flight 93" have been all over the map. For some, it seems too soon to reopen the raw wounds that the tragedies of that day inflicted on our national psyche. For others, remembering the events and trying to make sense of them is part of the healing from those wounds.

Closer to home, The Natchez Trace and how it started really impressed me to check it out; Of course, The Grand Canyon, Statue of Liberty(which I'vebeen to) was all interesting; Highly recommended for the wanderlust among us; ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mind blowing
Having met James and briefly discussing his work, only makes me appreciate the book that much more. When I asked him why he did what he did and why he risked life and limb to capture some of these images, he simply replied "People have got to know."
5-0 out of 5 stars The most amazing and moving photojournalism
When I first looked at Inferno by James Nachtwey it was hard to believe what I was looking at. The images of the harsh and inhumane conditions in which Romanian ophanes are kept, the starving and impoverished people of Somalia, the battlegrounds and devastion of Bosnia and Chechyna, the social and economic divisions in India, and the terrible images of Rwanda that defy human comprehension. Nachtwey combines amazing artistic abilities that remain in one's mind with the raw and unrefined images of the harshest places in the world. To look at Nachtwey's pictures is more than just looking, but experiencing. When looking at these pictures you experience an intense mixture of emotions from anger, fear, sadness, and struggling to grasp how this acts could be done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scary and sad
I bought this book because I do not want to hate Bush. As a recovering member of AA, I wanted to know more about him, because I doubt he has ever set foot into an AA meeting. If he had done so and truly grasped the concepts, he would not be doing the things he does.
1-0 out of 5 stars Justin Frank on the Couch
Well, first off, I have to admit to not having read the book, but I heard this nitwit on The Randi Rhodes Show this afternoon, and within about a minute I nearly lost control of the car I was laughing so hard.Something about the young G.W. Bush getting off torturing small animals and shoving hot pieces of steel up their rectums. But he's a famous doctor - who am I to question his diagnoses?
5-0 out of 5 stars Serious Work
This is not just your usual Bush bash - it is a serious work by a well respected professional. If you find The Toxic Texan's thoughts and actions inexplicable and want to make some sense of it all, read this book. This is probably the best book I have read on why/how this man operates. It explains why Bush cannot speak when talking about subjects requiring understanding or compassion - but he never gets it wrong when he's talkin' tough.

By a recent count, the continent of Africa comprises some 1,300 cultures. Some of them number millions of people, some only a few families; some are thriving, while others are in danger of disappearing, the victims of acculturation or, in extreme cases, of genocide. This diversity--and the dangers to it--is little known outside Africa. PhotographersCarol Beckwith andAngela Fisher highlight both matters in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How Photography Made the Day
The 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center was not only the biggest news event in decades, it was also the most photographed one. Some people by chance got pictures of Flight 11 crashing into the north tower, and after that the cameras never stopped."Men and women by the hundreds, then thousands - bystanders with point-and-shoots, TV news teams, photojournalists by the score - felt compelled to snap history, fiery and cruel against the blue."So writes David Friend, who used to be the director of photography for _Life_ magazine, in _Watching the World Change: The Stories Behind the Images of 9/11_ (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux). You have heard plenty of 9/11 stories, but chances are you remember mostly the images.Friend makes the point that Americans who are old enough remember where they were when they _heard_ about JFK's shooting, but they remember where they were when they _saw_ the 9/11 terror attacks. The book is a lucid and fascinating recounting of how some of the most famous of the photographs came to be.It is not a coffee-table book full of photos; there are only forty or so reproduced here, but the recounting of the shots and the reflections on photography in the modern news era will make intense reading even for those who have seen the images over and over. And all of us have seen the images over and over; we cannot look away, which makes Friend's observations particularly pertinent.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning, touching, excellent book
This book is a riveting read about the stories behind the photos of 9-11. It presents information within a context that explores both the personal point of view of the photographer, as well as different points of view when relevant.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Craft of a day's shooting pictures
This is a prefect craft of the power of photographs and everything that comes into play around shooting a cataclysmic disaster such as 9/11. The author has navigated the wherabouts of several people and what drove them to shoot that day and the affects of certain photos on our lives. The NOTES section at the end, the bibliography, is the best and most detailed that I've ever seen. Photos in the middle of the book are well used and described throughout the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost "The One Textbook" for Photojournalism
I have been using Kobre's excellent book as a text for teaching Introductory Photojournalism ever since the first edition; it has always been the best source out there for teaching and has improved with each edition.I consider the current (5th Edition) is be almost "The ONE Textbook" for learning everything you need to knowfor understanding and practicing Photojournalism. A bit more on layout and design for Picture Stories would make it perfect.

Readings from this book provided much debate and learning experiences for our class. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book in Photojournalism you will ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars 100 pictures saya million words...
This is an amazing book. It captures America at its finest and also not-so finest, but thats America for you. "They" say a picture says 1,000 words but there are so many pictures in this book that capture life at its fullest and these pictures say a million words. I rented the book from the library for the longest time and kept renewing it because I enjoyed looking at it so often, and finally I bought my own- and several others like Missouri 24/7, California 24/7, florida 24/7... etc. This is something that should be sitting on your coffee table, or at least something you look through once.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift Idea, Great Custom Cover
I bought this book as a gift after hearing about it on NPR. The custom cover looked fantastic. I'm not sure what happened with those customers who gave this a 1 star. My experience with the custom cover process and the service was extremely smooth. They told me it would take 3 weeks but I received it in 5 days. THERE'S NO BETTER GIFT FOR A SOMEONE INTERESTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY. GET READY FOR BIG HUGS AT THE UNWRAPPING!

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book and custom cover!
The book has beautiful photographs and wonderful captions full of miniature stories. I ordered a cover, and when I had trouble with uploading (I'm not very computer literate) their customer service team got back to me in a day and they helped me through it -- even resizing my picture for me. My custom cover order came in three weeks. I have to say it was really worth the effort seeing the final cover in my hands. I'm surprised they don't charge us more for the whole thing.I've ordered many more as gifts.Their new site is easier to use and I was even able to track my order using the USPS tracking number they gave me. I would expect any company trying out a whole new idea to take a few months to get such a large operation together, but now its June and the site seems so be working great! I would give it another chance if you had problems in the past. I'm a satisfied customer and I hope they get more positive reviews because I know they're really trying their best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A true to life history of 9/11
I bought both Aftermath books for my wife who is a photographer. Her opinion is this book is the better of the two. While it might be smaller and in black and white, it has a much better depth of feeling to the pictures presented.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
9/11 is obviously is major tragedy, and it is hard to downplay any effort to memorialize it.However, Botte's "Aftermath:Unseen 9/11 Photos by a New York City Cop" is a far less impressive work of photography than Meyerowitz's "Aftermath:World Trade Center Archive."

This book is great for someone who has a little experience, or for those who may have a lot. It gives a lot of great ideas for new ways of creating and working on images, and provides a lot of information on how to go about the processes. Some info is pretty technical, but there are plenty of processes that are novice-friendly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection
I am sure everyone is aware that Scene of the Crime is not the first collection of police archive photos to be released. The past few years have seen the release of many collections of such photos; the most well known being New York Noir, Evidence and Death Scenes.New York Noir and Death Scenes have a common thread in their use of well-known writers in their introductions. Luc Sante the noted New York historian collected the photographs for Evidence and penned the introduction for New York Noir.Katherine Dunne, the author of Geek Love is responsible for the intro to Death Scenes. Scene of the Crime follows that tradition; drafting the modern master of Los Angeles noir, James Ellroy, to pen the introduction to this collection of archival Los Angeles crime photos.Much as Luc Sante was the ideal choice for New York Noir, Ellroy is perfect for this collection of photographs from the city that has been his muse.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
Scene of the Crime was a bit disapointing due to the fact that the readr must go back and forth from the photos, to the captions, which are compiled at the end.Quite a few of the cases have no information available at all, as the other reviewers have mentioned, and although the LAPD has done a great job maintaining paper on most of these cases, some details are bound to slip through the cracks.
5-0 out of 5 stars LAPD Scene Of The Crime (captions)
Just a note on other reviews in regard to the lack of captions. The LAPD negatives are not kept with the case files. There are very few case files even available, as they have been destroyed due to lack of space. There is a normal descruction process within the LAPD for paper files. The cases researched in this book were taken from old homicide log books. Also newspaper databases were used. If you would like more details on the LAPD Archive please visit fototeka.com ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An intimate peek into the early Stones
The Rolling Stones: In the Beginning by Bent Rej is a marvelous look at the behind the scenes life of the Rolling Stones before they became the band we are so familiar with.As the book tells us, Bent Rej had unprecedented access to the band when they made their first European tour. Many of the photographs come from this trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives faces to the fallen soldiers and journalists.
Normally I am able to tell a person why I like a book or why I like a movie. However, in this case, I am really not able to say why I thought this book was excellent. 5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting . . . and a memorial to anyone killed in Vietnam
As a photographer, I can't say I own "Requiem" out of sheer joy for the greatness of the photographs within.(No one who owns this book will keep it for that reason.)In fact, this is a book that can be at times painful to open up and look at.
